Kaadhal is a true story whereby the real person (you will find out) involved in this story and who also told the story during a train journey, gave the permission to have it made into a movie.
This is my first review on this website and I don't believe in revealing detail plots in my reviews. But I would try and convince a potential viewer on the pyschology and philosophy about this amazing movie. Well, the plot is common but in a never done way before.
So , I just watched a movie that stars Bharat (''Boys'') and Sandhiya (would want to believe she has acted in multiple movies!). ''Kaadhal'' stems from an unbelieveable story approach but yet it is a true story. It illustrates painful realities when love is mixed in with over-attached parents with even more overly attached belief systems. Namely that demonic caste system. Hope God is watching the caste system crap going on. But everything in this movie is blended well, very much like a smooth cocktail. Just the right amount of everything. And I can't think of any other movies that has portrayed the processes of love as real as ''Kaadhal'' And an equally simplistic name to accompany the movie! This is true love as it is.
I got to say that I love this movie very much - maybe too much. And I know why. The hero, heroine, supporting actors (friends of the hero and heroine), all the other characters, most of the songs, the location, the natural lighting, the guy pissing on the street, and of course, the climax, make this an original masterpiece by Balaji Sakthivel. It's really hard to see good acting these days (over acting is more common), and that is a major reason for me to like this movie.
No over use of emotions, but the right usage of over emotions. No unrelated songs to fill and purely entertain lusty viewers, but just the right songs for the appropriate occasions. No useless violence that make most movies stupidly unbelievable and only to glorify the hero, but the real violence that is actually going on, even today, as I write this. No villain needed because the real villains are entwined in our everyday lifes, as this movie will prove it. The fact that such movies are uncommon, places ''Kaadhal'' in a pedestal of its own. Yup, rarity is good as it is the essence of originality.
There are a few scenes that may seem a bit straying, but hey, this is a movie, and such scenes are needed or else it becomes a documentary. And I am sure no one would want to go to a theatre to watch some Discovery Love. But even the straying scenes are tastefully done and stays in contact with the whole storytelling. Humor is well justified and good.
We all fall in love (when we should rise in love). This movie actually shows how falling in love can actually crash and shatter one's life. But, this is real life. Maybe not all of us go through the same incidents, but the worst is yet to be discovered. This movie might prompt a lot of teenagers to start loving right now, but it sure is also going to scare the hell out of many parents and children as well. And it might make a few feel guilty. Not really guilty though, as people don't change that easily.
I would say that ''Kaadhal'' is a wake up call to India, if everyone watches it. And if they don't, more movies will be made just like this, because more stories like this will be told in trains and planes. And because nothing can stop people from loving as well as parents from objecting. And that's all because most people can't see beneath the skin.
I can say that this movie was not done for the sake of completing a movie and making some big money (the reason most movies are made), but it was done to prove a point, as artistically as possible. Although I do not doubt that this movie is going to become a cult classic, and make big bucks as well.
Bharat is an amazing actor, much like Kamalhassan in his unique roles. He has a colorful future, and when I come to India to make a movie, I will find him. Sandhiya is even amazing as this is her debut film. Her expressions and emotions just want me to go back in time and fall in love again. The cast for the family members are just a perfect pick for this movie. Maybe they are all related!
In conclusion, I would say the fact this movie is simple but extremely touching to the heart, makes it a winner in my database of favourite movies. Please watch it with everybody you like - be it girlfriend, girlfriend's father, boyfriend, friends, and all other family members.
I am a Singaporean tamil born and raised here. Mostly attracted to logical movies, be it hollywood, bollywood, or collywood, I am a connoissuer for such movies. The fact is that I have never been to India and ''Kaadhal'' makes me want to come there now. So with ''Kaadhal'', I would give it a rating, if compared to other tamil movies in the last ten years, a 4.9999/5. Thanks for reading this review.
