I am watching just too many movies these days and reviewing them back to back like a professional critic working for the entertainment division of a news channel. One of my greatest fears at times is to wonder if I will only remain a critic of others work or will I have some work done myself for others to criticize it.
Appreciating a movie is what I always like to do but there are times when I watch a movie and just want to go and scream at someone to get my money back that I invested to watch it. Of course, it wouldn't happen that way as it was my erroneous choice to watch the movie voluntarily and there was absolutely no force used by anyone to logically think of exercising my stupid option of asking my money back(I don't know whom should I approach for my money either). I can do one thing and that is to notify people to not put their money to watch just an ordinary movie(ordinary according to my perception). As silly as it might sound, being an outsider to the film industry, I just want to scream at filmmakers to take their time to make movies and even if its just one a year that they are willing to give us, let them give us the best, high quality, standard ones. After a movie is shot and edited, wouldn't it be objectively seen by the makers of that particular movie? Don't they have brains enough to understand that its flawed to make corrections and release it later? Okay, let me confess, I technically know nothing about movies or the art of film-making. Ha ha. If I ever did why would I be here talking about others work?
There were three Bollywood movies released today. Grand Masti, Horror Story and John Day. Grand Masti was something that I wanted to watch with my friends on a Sunday and of the other two, I decided to watch John Day as I am a sort of a fan of Naseeruddin Shah. People in the entire multiplex were interested in only buying tickets for Grand Masti and I was the odd one amongst some ten of them who was watching John Day. My way of reviewing a movie is always to talk more about the experience of watching the movie than the plot of the movie, but I realized over time that people like the plot to be given away in the review and I don't mind doing that. The movie opens with a gal and a guy having come on a vacation to Casablanca estate(I don't know where on earth is that) and immediately shifts to John Day(surprisingly, its the name of a character played by Naseeruddin Shah) and his wife burying their daughter's body and obviously grieving over the event of death of their daughter. Mr. Day is a Manager at a Bank and it is shown that the gal who was with the guy on a vacation to the estate is the dead daughter of the protagonist. Goons attack Mrs. Day and threaten Mr. Day by informing the attack on his wife as a way to rob a bank he works in(which also has documents of Casablanca estate). John in the process of getting to understand the mystery of why he was attacked and why was the bank robbed gets to know that the same mystery holds key to his daughters death. Its leant that she isn't intentionally murdered but was unknowingly set to fire along with the entire property(estate she had been to along with her boyfriend) on a crazy real estate deal and proceedings by the antagonists to gain control over the property of very rich, expensive Casablanca estate. Mr. Day getting to know all of this over his journey in the story is overcome by vengeance and is behind all the goons responsible for his daughters death.
The climax of the movie ends in all the antagonists being killed like in a Shakespearean tragedy. Mr. Day is the only man alive as even his wife being earlier attacked by the goons is in coma and eventually dies. Hmmmmm! Please don't stop reading, the credit rolls to signify the viewers that Mr. Day has now provided justice and avenged his daughter's and his wife's death.
Naseeruddin Shah is an acting genius and I really think he has played the character to his best. Randeep Hooda is one of the Police officer-turned-goon in the movie playing a dark, gory, sinister brute who haunted by his past always has his way to just be deadly evil. Sharat Saxena, another goon also plays his character well but there is nothing that anyone can do if the characters played well doesn't translate into a great movie because of a weakly written screenplay.
One of my friends on FB wrote a few days back that there is nothing as powerful as the descriptive power of words for anything is either good or bad as is described. I might have perceived the story of this movie in a strange way and have written the above criticizing words about the movie but I could easily sense the way a little crowd of approximately ten people were reacting while watching this movie. A couple sitting next to the aisle next to my seat just declared the movie as boring after the interval and moved from the Gold class seat to the Sofa seat(they were sent back by the usher during the second half of the show anyways.) The number of people were reduced from ten to almost five when a gang of four left the cinema hall after a few minutes into the second half. Guys sitting right in front of my row were laughing funnily once the credits rolled and a guy even commented to another to let me have a clearer view of a great movie(of course, he was sarcastic).
I think its good for you guys to go and watch Grand Masti instead of this one. Someone just messaged me, Grand Masti is sick as hell!
