Jeepers Creepers 2
Jeepers Creepers where do ya get them peepers...
Remember that one? Right ! Our old friend the creeper is back again and this time you'd wish he wasn't. Forgive me if I have got a bit carried away in this review but I am thinking this shouldn't be anything new for you ;-)
A little background (2 yrs ago)
It all began one lazy afternoon (2001) when my phone rang and woke me up from my sweet slumber. It was my partner in crime Yogi (any resemblance to people living or dead is purely coincidental) who insisted that we go and watch Jeepers Creepers. The movie was dubbed as one of the best horror films of the century or something like that. Yogi and I are poles apart in our choices of movies. While I do appreciate good quality, well made Hollywood flicks I watch a lot of , what I would loosely describe as , ''non-commercial'' cinema too (films which unfortunately seldom make it to India while every bit of Hollywood trash does). And having subjected Yogi to the torment of sitting together and watching those movies with me I sometimes feel obligated to watch anything he suggests no matter what I think of it. The only bit of information about Jeepers Creepers I had was through the trailers, which ran in theaters for months. Two teenagers, a boy and a girl, peeping through a ''hole'' which comes out of the ground in the form of a metallic tube kinda thing. Then the boy goes into it ''Is there anyone down there? Is there anyone down there?'' preparing to get terrified, as if on purpose. I say to myself ''Boy this is got be one dumb movie''. Anyway I am preparing myself for the worst and start looking up the ad for the movie again when I spot something great. The name of the producer : Francis Ford Copolla. Well well well. The mere mention of this name is enough for me to see any film, not that I had any choice with Yogi anyway.
I must admit that I was in for a surprise. For the first hour or so of the movie I was at the edge of my seat. Two kids on a desolate highway being chased by an unseen killer. Especially the way the kids first see the killer from a distance dumping bodies into a ''hole''. Chilling !! As scene after scene kept rolling I kept turning to Yogi ''Man ! this has got be one the best horror films I have ever seen'' Then all of sudden everything changes. Heads start rolling , cars start turning upside down. This creature, if I may call it so, starts jumping from one car to another appearing out of nowhere (previously it was driving a truck). All excitement which had built up gradually vanishes. Yogi kinda glances at me almost saying ''Hey. Its not my fault ! '' Some creature called the creeper who mutilates bodies, carves them and flies around with big wings. What a waste ! The movie fast turns into , what I can only describe as, an average supernatural thriller. The movie is kinda in its final phase where a showdown with the devil is expected at the police station. And every now and then the song ''jeepers creepers'' is played. I notice that Yogi's hand is rubbing his forehead far too often. All of a sudden he whispers ''Want some more popcorn ?'' I'm like well... OK. Poor Yogi. He is a horror film fanatic and yet the poor soul feels this way. Theres got to be something wrong with this film. Anyway the film ends on a stupid note when the creeper gets a hold of the boy (brother) and flies away with him. Apparently he liked his eyes. ( Aaaaaarrrrghhhh !)
The present day

I guess the obvious question to ask is ''Why in the name of God would I go and see this film ?'', especially after what I described above. Good question.
Time and place have changed but its the same old Yogi who calls me again. Knowing that I have no plans for that ill-fated Saturday, he announces that he is going to call in to my place after which we are going to see Jeepers Creepers 2 and promptly hangs up. The bell rings and I am lining up to kick Yogi's behind when I notice that he is not alone. In fact he is accompanied by his about-to-be girlfriend Miss X . Apparently Miss X's brother owns a go-karting place and after the movie they were gonna enjoy free karting for hours and Yogi being the sweetheart that he is thought of inviting me too. Hmmmmmm. my heart says go-karting, my mind says no Jeepers Creepers again. But we know who's gonna win in the end.Right ! Frankly I would rather watch President Bush's address to the nation then go for Jeepers Creepers but you can't always resist temptation. Can you ? Knowing what to expect I started to prepare myself for the worst.
Jeepers Creepers 2 (the sequel) picks up where the first film had left. Although by now its run out of steam. Following on from the original film, the audience first watches how the tormentor, our winged friend the Creeper (Jonathan Breck), snatches the younger son of Taggart (Ray Wise) carrying him off into the sky. Furious, Taggart and his clan decide to take him on. According to the legend the creature comes back every 23rd spring for exactly 23 days to feed on good looking young women and men and eats their organs and limbs in order to regrow his own. Organ smugglers beware, there is a new guy in town. ( sorry. got a bit carried away again..) Understandably the creeper began killing right from day one and this is now the final day (23rd) day of massacre.
Naturally a school bus full of the basketball players, boys and girls, cheerleaders and coaches ends up on this deserted highway with a flat tyre. In typical horror movie style the creeper starts killing them quickly and mercilessly like cattle. Sometimes masquerading as a scarecrow, sometimes appearing outta nowhere, sometimes doing stuff, which would put any ninja to shame. While in the previous film you couldn't really take a good look at Mr. Creeper, (there was sense of ambiguity about the creature which served the film well in the end) this time there's no such thing. I must say not much imagination went into making this charming figure. At best I would describe him as Freddie Krueger with wings.
Final piece of advice
Before watching the film I kept thinking about one thing. Why would Yogi and his friend Ms. X choose a horror film as the venue for their first date. I mean how romantic is that ? Then as the film progressed I could just see why. When you are really scared you feel the need to hold something or someone. So if YOU don't have any such needs it would be advisable to stay away from Jeepers Creepers 2. You might not get frightened but you could beat yourself to death.
But thats only my opinion, I could be wrong..
