I am used to having 2 news papers at my home at 6 in the morning. While we get The Hindu and Indian Express in our parts of India, I certainly like reading both. The 2 are great newspapers and I would like to tell about the Indian Express

Journalism

They have a fundu team of journalists and manage to get good details. They have now become synonymous with great exposes. The issues that were exposed ranges from “Govt’s corruption delicacies” to “Corporation’s indifference to environment”. Each of these issues are well exposed which otherwise may not come to the notice of we citizens

Follow-up

Many a times, in Indian magazines, issues are raised but forgotten after a few weeks. IE does well to do a follow-up article, which has some meaningful information.

Over Sensationalizing

Sometimes, only sometimes, they over estimate the money/damage involved and generally give flowery title to an article to catch our attention. Mature readers know the difference though.

Rumors

There is nothing wrong with siding the oppressed minority but twisting facts and publishing rumors as news items damages the image of India to outside world. Among others, an example would be the Staines’ murder case. It’s true that when doing investigative journalism, it’s hard to verify all the facts but care to be taken not to trumpet false hearsays as news items just for the case of sensationalizing.

Thankfully, news like these do not appear frequently.

Language

Everyone knows journalism is a subject while studying English and IE chooses to ignore simple grammar and proof reading, which manifests as irritating language in the articles. Another complaint would be chaining of sections in a news item thereby a sequence would not be felt by the reader if he/she chooses to read from top to bottom. An example would be a news item reporting a bus accident where How this section of road is perilous is detailed first, calamities will be detailed next, then the quote from police inspector and just when you think the item will end, it says about the cause of accident. Useful items like contact phone numbers, Traffic deviation because of accident, and exact location of accident will not be given (if you are a relative/friend of a prospective victim, you will not appreciate the article).

Sunday Express

I reckon this to be the best Sunday magazine, has a lot of wonderful articles every week. Makes your Sunday morning worthwhile to wait for. The topics for these articles, the layout, use of colors all makes it a pleasant reading experience. You may have to read one edition for you to evaluate the specifics of the subjects.

Overall, this is a nice newspaper but their sensations should not carry you away. Do not expect them to apologize for reporting rumors. They have an attitude of “Our Duty” in there.

Vokay Ciao,

Ram
