When I walked into an almost empty cinema today to watch Hum Tum, I was wondering if I had made a mistake in coming to watch this movie but I told myself, it?s a weekday morning, obviously the cinema would be empty but my sister came in afterwards and told me she peeked into the next cinema which was full.

Okaaay

But we decided to stick to the tickets that we bought and watch it anyway.

The Story

The story opens with the cartoon characters of Hum (the guy) and Tum (the girl) explaining how g-d created earth, then created man, and after resting and in a state of dreaminess created women and never rested henceforth.

Karan (Saif) was a successful cartoonist cum writer who had just released his best seller comic novel based on Hum and Tum and was holding a press conference on his book.

He told of the girl in his life, and the story flashes back to nine years ago (that?s freaking long was my thought) when he met Rhea at the airport, both of them about to leave for America to continue their studies.

Rhea was a serious, sassy and independent modern girl and Karan was your average boyish, rich romeo, always out for a fun and a laugh.

They made friends (sort of) in the plane, went for a look see around Amsterdam which ended badly between the two of them.

Through a series of coincidence, Karan and Rhea kept bumping into each other and somehow the friendship developed into love.

I found the story interesting with an uncanny knack for hitting the nail on the head when it comes to boy girl relationship.

What I thought

Yash Chopra has definitely started to move with time and gave room for each character to grow, doing away with the ridiculous love at first sight theory which his previous movies seem to favour so much.

Hum Tum was amazingly fresh and simple.

One thing though, the comic strips in between the story was absolutely unnecessary and uninteresting.

The cartoon characters of Hum and Tum had really annoying voices and they never had anything interesting to say. Hum especially reminded me of my spoiled younger brother and Tum sounded like a bratty rich girl.

Karan started out as an immature don juan who only wants one thing out of girls and you could see his personality grow with him as he began growing more sensitive to those around him and yet managed to retain that almost childish outlook to life.

(though I thought the Tom Cruise look was BAD bad bad).

Saif is definitely growing as an actor. I give him the thumbs up for this performance. This movie belonged to him all the way.

Rhea?s character was solid and Rani did justice to your average modern girl looking for her place in the world.

She looked gorgeous in the movie, a little more curvaceous than her last movie but still stunning. I loved her with short hair, she looked extremely vibrant in that hair cut.

The rest of the support cast were okay but I would give special mention to Abishek in his short appearance as Rhea?s husband.

The speech he gave to Karan in the airport was a man strong enough to see himself for who he is and proud to be who he was. It showed wisdom and strength of character.

Was sad he had so little screen time.

The music was nothing new, the same tried and tested formula except for the opening track U n I, I loved that one.

It was the only memorable one that I found in the movie. Catchy with a good beat. And maybe Ladki Kyon, that was a fun song to listen to as well.

All in all? Watch it why not. It wasn?t better than Yuva but still watchable.
