I read all UniCorn articles on this site till this date. So I have to publish the facts about the UniCorn to every one of you as I'm now a proud owner of the one.
This article covers topics I found to be the fact and no other articles has mentioned.
Let me start with the uniqueness of UniCorn. This is currently the only bike you can buy in India with a mono rear suspension. Like the one you see only in sports bike category. Now you may think... 'Oh! great, so what? Is that all you get for 50+ grands?'!!! But let me say that it is one of the main reason I'd choose this bike over Pulsar.
Normal bike have rear suspension attached directly underneath the seat. This causes a considerable level of shock reaches rider's and pillion's body no matter how good the twin suspensions are. But the mono suspension is attached directly to the center of the main frame of the bike. This prevents the shock from reaching directly to the rider and provides maximum comfort even on the harshest of roads. I really tested it on unfinished village roads with full of potholes and loose gravel. You must ride it to believe it.
Another remarkable thing about this bike is its engine. Its so quiet and yet powerful. Its also fuel efficient. I am getting 56 km/l. The result is from my daily trip to office at a speed mostly between 50 and 60 km/hr. 60% national highway, 30% state highway, and 10% city riding. Pulsar 150 might get close to that. But Pulsar 150 actually has a 143.x CC engine and UniCorn has 149.x CC. The gear system is smooth and you can ride at 25km/hr in 5th gear on straight roads.
It is hard to find the neutral (who needs one when you can start the engine even if the gear is engaged. Thanks to the primary kick mechanism). I have sometimes trouble in finding 1st gear while riding. It just not come down from 2nd to 1st. I temporarily solved this problem by slightly engaging the clutch while it is in 2nd gear and then it will be ok. That may be a specific problem with my bike only. But I don't know. It should be corrected on 1st service.
UniCorn's engine exhaust comes out through a catalytic convertor inside the beautiful silencer which purifies the exhaust gases and is environment friendly (You are not worried about that. Are you?). But it demands Unleaded Petrol. The manual says that you should not use leaded petrol which even in small quantities will damage the catalytic convertor. No one there at the Jhon's Honda showroom told me about that. (Who in the world reads a manual!!! Someone does ;)
The style is good. The rear end is more stylish and unique. They could have made body coloured side panels (fibre panels beneath the fuel tank) which would make the bike more attractive. On the other hand, the fuel tank is big and stylish with smoothly carved sides for knee rest. The RPM, Speedometer and Fuel guage cluster is very nicely integrated by three intersecting circles with the bigger speedometer dial in the center. very nice. The headlight looks nice and pointed. The disk brake is giving good results. Closer inspection revealed that the disk is made by TATA.
The seat module can be opened with the bike's own key. But there is little space to store anything. Even I found it hard to find any space for the bike's manual. The manual itself is not very big either. My electronic watch comes with a manual twice its size in pages and almost equal in dimensions. The rear view mirrors are same as that of Splendor. They could have put a different and more stylish one. The bike does not come with crash guard and number plate. It costs extra. Only accessory you will get free is a Saree Guard !
To sumup, I do recommend this bike to those who cares about comfort and mileage more than sudden pickup and raw power. No bike is perfect. This bike do has minor drawbacks like all other bikes. But the overall quality, performance and style is good enough.
