Take Himmat, Forget Sense. Review on Himmatwala

There is a reason why I hate movies form the 80’s, barring a few. They are blatantly  ridiculous and have all the ingredients that can leave us confused and question our senses and when a movie from that era is remade there is nothing more that I could have expected. Needless to say, it falls way below my expectations.

When director Sajid told at a press conference yesterday that he does not even want half a star for his movie I never thought he would go this far. He did not want it for a reason – The movie does not deserve it and as mouthshut does not allow me to give it a half star rating, I’m about to draw Sajid ire upon myself.

The movie is not a complete copy of the original but just a whimsical take of it, many of the original characters in the 80’s himmatwala are missing while new idiotic one’s are introduced. Plus there is much more masala including silly item numbers, fights with tigers, a really annoying plot

surrounding a village election – which I think was an unnecessary change from the original. Many disappointing additions are made to an already inane plot – an attempted gang rape, some really senseless political drama and cases of mistaken identities have been added.

As for the acting, it is as pitiful as the plot. I don’t know why an actor of Ajay Devgn’s caliber who has won national awards has gone for such a stupid role which totally undermines his acting prowess. Tamanah looks beautiful would be an understatement. She plays a perennial damsel in distress but is nothing compared to Sree Devi in the original. She over acts in most of her parts. Apart from the leads another disappointment in the movie is Adhyayan Suman who achieved a feat in terrible acting. Paresh Rawal happens to be an only saving grace in the movie and the only reason you would likely take a risk to watch this movie.

What can I say about Sajid’s direction. Well it is no less compared to what Farah(his sister) or Shirish(his brother –in –law) had to offer. And trio completes what I can call the most Trilogy of ridiculousness in the form of – Tees Maar Khan, Joker and Himmatwala.

The Songs though was good enough but the lyrics are nothing new and have been taken from the original. Lack of originality is becoming a serious cancer in Bollywood these days.
