It’s not uncommon to find black sheep's in many families, who are the subject of permanent torment until they don't prove their worth. Hasee Toh Phasee is a tale of two black sheep's who fall in love at a time when they shouldn’t and what happens as a result.
The film might seem Dharma Production-ish with the glitz and glamor presented in the songs, but at its heart, Hasee Toh Phasee is a relatable tale that is based in very real people and situations. And it works so well that one is bound to feel exhilarated after watching the film! Although 2014 has just begun, it won’t be wrong to say that Hasee Toh Phasee would be counted as one of the best films of the year!
The story of the movie:
Nikhil(Sidharth Malhotra) is all set to get married to Karishma(Adah Sharma). On the professional front, he’s trying his best to get his business on track but luck doesn’t seem to be on his side. He fears that Karishma might dump him if he fails in his endaevour.
At this juncture, he bumps into Meeta(Parineeti Chopra), Karishma’s sister having problems of her own and even comes up with unique solutions, but for other people’s problems. Nikhil instantly feels a connection with Meeta while Meeta too gets drawn towards him. What happens next forms the rest of the movie.
Hasee Toh Phasee goes on a high from the word ‘Go’ itself! The 1992 and 2006 sequences are excellent and film gets better as Nikhil-Meeta meet in the present day. Meeta’s weird behavior and expressions bring a smile but as the film progresses, one empathizes considerably with her and her problems. Of course, the high points are the conversations and moments between Nikhil and Meeta. The fun continues in the second half as well.
The film drags slightly but nevertheless, it keeps one engaged and entertained. The emotional sequence in the pre-climax is terrific. The climax is stereotypical and something seen in zillions of Hindi films. But the execution is so brilliant that one enjoys the whole process! Time and again, I have emphasized the importance of execution over script and Hasee Toh Phasee just confirms the same!
Sidharth Malhotra goes into a drastically different territory as compared to his debut venture, Student Of The Year, and comes out with flying colors! The actor was in a challenging position as Parineeti’s character was much more impactful and we all know how terrific Parineeti is as an actor! Yet, Sidharth maintains a strong position. The actor is surely bound to make many people sit up and take notice of his immense talent!
Parineeti Chopra, meanwhile, is just OUTSTANDING! She has proved her worth earlier with all her 3 films but her performance in Hasee Toh Phasee is a class apart! The actress gets to play a difficult role but she pulls it off with ease and sans any effort! And she moves the viewers in some of the crucial emotional scenes, again with ease! Without a doubt, she is one of the greatest actresses we have right now!
Adah Sharma plays her part and is sizzling in her entry scene. Manoj Joshi(Devesh Solanki) has a significant role to essay and does a great job. Sharat Saxena(S B Bharadwaj) is very good and raises laughs. Sameer Khakhar, who won hearts with the performance of drunkard in Jai Ho, gives another great performance as Devesh’s brother. The actor playing the Indian Idol contestant is natural. Other actors too play their part well.
Vishal-Shekhar’s music is good but nothing great. Zehnaseeb and Manchala are effectively used in the film. Shake it Like Shammi and Punjabi Wedding Song are quite foot tapping. Amar Mangulkar’s background score is quite impressive. Harshvardhan Kulkarni’s story might have been borrowed from numerous romcoms of Bollywood but he adds some wonderful elements that make for a great plot. Anurag Kashyap, Harshavardhan Kulkarni, Purva Naresh and Vinil Mathew’s dialogues are one of the highpoints of the film – very sharp, very smart and very funny!
Vinil Mathew does a great debut as a director and ensures that his film has a lasting impression. There were a few loopholes in the film that are avoidable. But the plusses are so many and they easily outweigh the negatives. Hope Vinil gives us many such memorable films in future!
Some of the best scenes:
The first scene.
Nikhil-Meeta’s first meeting
Nikhil-Meeta meet after 7 years.
Nikhil-Meeta stuck in the rain.
The intermission point.
Nikhil hugs Meeta
Nikhil-Meeta roam in Mumbai at night.
The last 35 minutes.
On the whole, Hasee Toh Phasee is one of the finest romcoms to have come out of Bollywood. The film touches heart quite easily thanks to it’s neat execution, relatable plot, real characters and a cute chemistry between the lead pair. And not to forget, Parineeti Chopra takes the film to a different level. This one’s a clean entertainer and a must watch without doubt.
Hope the film works big time and it becomes one of the biggest hits of the year. It deserves it!
My rating- 4.5/5!
