You would never believe that the girl who once though that this was a stupid, dumb and totally boring book is now a huge fan of Harry Potter. Yes, the first time I saw the book I thought it was boring. I must tell you that I only looked at the cover and did not read the book. The saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” comes to mind doesn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what I did, judged the book by its cover. And I did not read any of the books until the third one. That was the first book in the series which I read and my opinion of Harry Potter changed completely. Then I got the first book and read it. It was a whole different world. Well, the world of Harry Potter is a whole different one. Where wizards, witches and magic all come to life, where things we could never have dreamed of comes to life. Incidentally, this is Harry’s first reaction to the world of magic. But let’s begin at the beginning.
Who is Harry Potter? When Harry was only one year old, the night of Harry’s first birthday actually, the most feared, most dreaded and most powerful dark sorcerer in the world, Lord Voldemort, goes to Harry’s parents’ home with the intention of killing Harry and his parents. Voldemort kills Harry’s mom, Lily, who was trying to save Harry from being killed. Voldemort also kills Harry’s father, James. When he tried to kill Harry, the curse backfired and Voldemort, powers gone, horribly weak, fled for his life. At the age of one, Harry miraculously survived the most powerful curse in the wizarding world. No one could survive a curse like that, especially from the darkest sorcerer in the world. But Harry did, amazingly. What happens to him now?
Albus Dumbledore turns up at Privet Drive, the place where Harry has to spend his life. He leaves Harry with his only remaining relatives, the Dursleys who are ordinary common people like us. Harry doesn’t know anything about his horrible past. He doesn’t know the truth about his parents’ death, he doesn’t know he is a wizard. The Dursleys treat him horribly, like…I can’t find the words to describe how. Let’s just say you wouldn’t want to live with the Dursleys if you were like Harry.
About ten years later Harry goes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to learn how to be a wizard. Of course not without a fight put on by the Dursleys. However, Harry makes it to Hogwarts. He soon makes friends; his best friends are Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Not to forget the gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid who rescued Harry from the ruins of his parents’ home and also brought him to Hogwarts. At once, Harry is totally famous. Everyone knows about him and his scar and his parents’ death and his encounter with Voldemort.
Now what is all this about a Sorcerer’s Stone? A Sorcerer’s Stone is said to have famous, legendary and magical powers. It can produce the Elixir of Life which would make the drinker immortal and can turn any metal or substance into gold. Have I memorized the book? Well, actually yes, I know the book by heart! So this Sorcerer’s Stone comes to Hogwarts because guess why? Voldemort’s after it. He wants the Stone for the Elixir of Life. Now, if he gets this Stone, he will resurface, more powerful and more dreadful than ever. It will be the end of Harry Potter and Hogwarts. The whole of the wizarding community would be drowned in fear and darkness of evil! The most I’m gonna tell you is that Harry and his friends manage to save the Stone from Voldemort. How do they do it? You guessed it….read the book and you’ll find out!
Believe me when I say it, this is a book worth reading. It’s full of suspense, absolutely thrilling…and after reading some of us might be convinced that we could take the train to Hogwarts if we tried. J.K. Rowling’s style of writing is funny, witty and attractive. You would not be able to put down this book even if you wanted to. And as for it being too late in the night, you could sleep the next day right? This book is one for everyone, parents, children, teens. Who would have ever dreamed of such things as magic and Quidditch, and an evil dark sorcerer whom everyone fears? No one else could have put across these things half as well as Rowling! No one else would have been able to create Harry Potter and put him through all those horrors and traumas. At the end of the book you’ll want to start reading the second one immediately, such is the excitement and suspense of the book.
