Handling Depression could be categorized under the heading handling life. because, in all truth, I’ve yet to meet anyone past the age of 20 who doesn’t have their story. It’s true. Depression isn’t a four letter word anymore [yet it is]. it’s just ‘life’. Nearly everyone has their tale of melancholy and gloom. Even those who don’t care to share their experience or even to remember that particularly dismal time in their own life, can relate to other’s stories. So. here are pieces of me for those of you who can identify with this real life monster yourself or are simply curious about how to plan for a successful “Pity-Party”.

Once upon a time, in the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains, there lived a girl named ScorpioDreams. She was the kind of girl who could always find good in everything. You know the type. hopelessly hopeful and filled with something resembling a zest for everything in life and love. She lived her days envisioning tomorrow, always appreciating the moment and finding inspiration, even in the silence. She was truly one person you would have enjoyed meeting. a young heart who loved life and cultivated dreams with a fertilizer that contained smidgens of excitement, grains of delight, cups of elation and pinches of motivation. Without a doubt, she held the light of life inside. but, then.

Things began to change. Her plans were often wrecked, by things like pain and sorrow. That old monster calling himself Death came knocking, stealing those she loved from her plans, crushing her optimism and faith with grief and ferocious feelings of anguish. Her heart became overwhelmed with guilt, shame and sadness, all those misleading feelings that frame the mind for what you know is coming . Depression.

Depression snatched her spontaneous joy in living right out of old ScorpioDreams' life. Quick as a flash, he had her believing that life was worthless as trash. He touched upon her passion with his hand of dissatisfaction and tempted her to believe that her dreams were nothing more than illusions, incredible feats that had no purpose or reason. He told her that life isn’t nearly so sweet as she’d once believed, left her lying in front of a tv without even the incentive to lift herself from the couch and pour herself a drink. Just like an invalid, she’d stare at a movie that she wasn’t even watching, all the time thinking. where is life’s meaning? What am I here for? Is this all there is? Is life only pain and if it is. why?

After giving in to the monster and giving up on herself, old ScorpioDreams finally witnessed something incredible. Yes, she did the unthinkable and let her failures bring her down. She scrounged around on the bottom, as low as she could get. until.

Something inside her spoke up and said. Don’t give up on yourself. Even when this life gets you down, when you wish you could just disappear, cease to exist. remember that each day will pass. Each moment, each statement, each event and each year. will pass. When you’re down on the bottom, grappling with your pain, think of tomorrow. Remember that this moment . will be yesterday. You’ll have new days, new chances and new moments. Feel what you’re feeling and live what you’re living. But always remember. your journey isn’t over. And, the longer you hold onto your sorrow, the longer you’ll need to keep telling yourself.

“ScorpioDreams. Get up and Get going. Remember that you’re not the only one who has gone through what you’re going through. Don’t allow this monster, despite it’s incredible strength, to erase the colors from your life. Don’t lye down and quit. Leave the pity-party to those who are more fit. Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying, ScorpioDreams. and eventually you will see, this moment has passed into the past and you’re well on your way to being that hopelessly hopeful girl again.”

Remember. everything passes. Handling depression is like handling life. Live it, deal with it and put in behind you. Hope this helps someone.
