CDMA vs GSM

GSMhas been the pioneering mobile technology in India.

CDMA was launched with much fanfare by Reliance and created a major divide with its aggressive pricing and flooding the market with its cheap Rs.500/- handsets from LG and Samsung.

Then RELIANCE learnt a bitter lesson when it found most dummy users vanishing after running up huge bills. We still see many of those handsets in the hands of street urchins using them as toys to play with and listen to fancy ringtones.

If indeed CDMA is a better technology, then why are RELIANCE and TATA switching loyalties and launching GSM services ? Reliance GSM and Tata Docomo is an example. That too after investing obnoxious sums in infrastructure ?

And, I must add here, that the reach and connectivity of RELIANCE and TATA is much more deeply penetrated in the hinterlands of our country as compared toGSM.

What I hate about CDMA - The handsets get too warm for comfort when talking. This is the most disconcerting fact and makes me very averse to using this technology.

Voice quality on CDMA is very electronic - If you compare the voice reception in GSM,its more closer to our landline voice quality - more acceptable and more like what we are used to. CDMA voice reception is clanky and takes time getting used to the blank outs of background noise.

CDMA does have one benefit though. The TATA Photon+ and Reliance Net ConnectWireless Broadband Internet USB devices provide a much superior browsing and download speeds than any other comparable service-and is based on the 1X CDMA technology.

GSM has got so many service providers that it constantly keeps them on their toes and improving day by day.

Over to you guys for your comments and ratings.

Regards

Raja
