A team, a coach and a captain!. Review on Greg Chappell

THE CHAPPELL BONANZA

Gregory Stephen Chappell may have found a permanent spot in the cricketing history - he will always be remembered by all the Saurav fans all around India, thanks to his extremely stupid stand against the former captain. He just seems to be getting more and more famous!

New Zealand's Brian McKechnie is some one else who will never forget the Chappell brothers, for that notorious under arm incident! This guy happens to be a man who gave one of the first bad marks to the Gentleman's game of cricket, and now he continues to get involved in controversy even as he is about 57 years old.

Coming back to the underarm incident, the match was certainly close, as the need to get 15 runs off the last over ended up with a six to tie the match off one delivery. The last delivery was to be bowled by Greg's younger brother Trevor Chappell, who seemed to have got some respect to the captain, the brother and left the Kiwis as well as many of the Australian players disgusted with this incident. The worst thing is that he did this to a number 10 batsman, thats even more disgusting!

FORMER AUSSIE

87 Test matches and 48 as a captain, scoring debut test centuries and scoring at an average of above 50 in test matches and 40 in One Days, having the experience of playing with different teams in his career, and also coaching South Australia - these are not too bad figures.

But as long as coaching a team like India after recieving a salary of around 78 lakhs is concerned, I wonder if he is doing his job in the way he is expected to be. But he certainly was an interesting batsman of his era. I can agree about the fact that he used to be a great player, and has done some good job for the Australian team.

Now we have tasted the problems of having a foreign coach, even if Ganguly-Wright combination was quite a successful one. But Chappell can be extremely glad because Saurav Ganguly has left him many of the best players like Dhoni, Pathan, Yuvraj and Kaif - now no need to look for any better players, as these players are few of the best options for Chappell. But look at what he does - he sends Dhoni at number 8, the same player who used to come at the third or fourth positions once.

RUTHLESS IN SOME MANNER

Well, I can agree to the fact that Chappell is ruthless and focussed. But he doesn't show these good features in a constructive manner, as he seems to be some one who is more unforgiving, who wants to drag his personal problems into the game of cricket. If he was unable to adjust with Saurav Ganguly, it was his problem, as the former coach of India was also from outside the country, and Indians had a very good going with Wright.

We certainly had a few other options for the coach, Australia's Tom Moody, West Indies' Desmond Haynes and India's Mohinder Amarnath. But this guy seemed to have the advantage over his fellow Australian Moody, of having played more matches, and being more famous (a decent way to say notorious) after the big underarm moment! He got in there with Ganguly's support and the first thing he does is kicking Ganguly out, this is what I call mutual respect! May be he won't be able to do the same with Tendulkar, thanks to the sponsors!

A WORLD CUP TO FOLLOW

We have a World Cup coming next year, but are we really prepared for it? Even after poor performances in the test series even in the sub continent, we can be glad that we are doing better in One Days. But will it be good enough? Where has our real batting power vanished?

We have Sehwag and the master ''plaster'' Sachin Tendulkar in poor form, and Laxman and Ganguly are no longer in the team - we have two players who have proved to be complete trash at the international level - Gautam Gambhir and Venu Gopal Rao. What a stylish process of team selection!

We couldn't stop South Africans even in our home ground and we are struggled against a second class team of England. In the last World Cup under Ganguly, we lost only against Australia, in a big margin. Now, I wonder if Indians can take on the big ones South Africa, New Zealand and Australia? Just hoping to find an answer soon.....

Anyways, I don't still judge Chappell's abilities to be below average. But his attitude sucks! His middle finger controversy was just too much (the way in which they justified it talking about an injury, was too stupid!), and from the way in which he thinks, it seems that he wants to be the supreme power, having the whole team under his own control, giving very little power to the wall, Rahul Dravid, and ruling the place like Hitler or some other freaky dictators in the World History had been doing.....well, we can still believe in the Indian team, as after all we do support them.....
