I was exposed to internet during MBA days when we had a free access to internet in our lab.
I created and my ID and my internet education started with browsing & more browsing.
Those were the days, the net connection used to be very slow and we used to sit in the lab refreshing the pages again & again just for checking mails. The funniest part was that all the internet friends were our batch mates only and we used to wait for the forwarded messages. During this phase I was introduced to chatting.
Yahoo messenger was the preferred chatting medium. Whom did we chat with? Ah! My friends sitting in the outer lab or the friend sitting just two comps away from me. Those were the days! Am getting nostalgic…
We all passed out and kept in touch through chatting but then professional lives started taking a toll on us. The craze of chatting reduced.
With Gmail & Google coming in picture thibgs got easier as they are easy to download & have no frills attached. However our companies too became quite vigilant and chatting portals were blocked big time. So the addiction to chat also reduced
However when MS came in my life I started making some good friends and our human nature is that ways that if we like a person we want to know more about them and interact with them and this was the time when I started cursing my company for blocking chat portals.
But one morning things changed, I was at home, logged on to g-talk and Vishal Kale came online, his online message said, “Am online GoTalkMobile”. (Thanks Vishal for introducing me to the site)
I saw that and didn’t waste any time in Goggling the site and getting all the required information. And here I am to narrate my journey of downloading-using-getting addicted to it-now trying to get de-addicted to GoTalkMobile
Go Talk Mobile is G-Talk instant messenger(IM) clientfor your J2ME-enabled cell phone. It's used for sending and receiving Google Talk and Jabber instant messages.(from official website)
~ You need~
.:. A GPRScompatible handset
.:. A GPRS activated handset
~ How to Download~
: The website to be visited is https://gotalkmobile.com/. I would suggest you to first check out the site on your comp so that you get an idea about what all is there.
The site has
- List of compatible handsets.
- Instructions on how to download & install the service on your handset.
- List of wall papers
- Details about the features & troubleshooting.
There are two versions of the software
Classic – or GoTalkMobile Postcard Edition.Takes less space and has fewer frills attached to it.
Rebel - Haven’t used it because whenever I had tried using it the session doesn’t log in. But it is the high-tech version and comes with many more features like wall papers
Once you have had a feel of the site go on to the browser of your mobile phone and visit the site http://www.wap.gotalkmobile.com. Follow the instructions which will be
The portal will be downloaded in your mobile and be saved wherever the downloaded applications are saved.
~ How to Use~
An icon of GoTalkMobile will appear in the applications folder, click on it, it will ask whether we should allow the application to connect to GPRS, accept it & select whichever access point you want to select.(This process might vary from handset to handset)
A red screen appears, click on Options tab there you will find
- Connect
- Options
- Account you need to enter your Gmail account log in details here.
- Notificationshere you can set the settings like you need a voice notification or not, pop or not etc.
The other two tabs are of Update & Feedback.
Once the settings are through you can log in by clicking on connect and lo behold all the online friends will pop on your mobile screen. I have attached one pic which shows how the screen will look.
Using the options tab you can send messages, postcard, Rename Contacts, Remove & Block contacts, Change your online status & message, Add new friends etc.
On the right side there is a tab “Minimize” which minimizes the whole application and in case you receive a message it pops out.
~ Some features~
- You can chat with more than once person and the message sent by the second person starts flashing on the upper end of the screen.
- Sometimes while you are chatting and have typed a long message the connectivity breaks and you need to log on again, all previous conversation lost
You do not get E-Mail alerts as is the case in a normal g-talk. But in a way it’s good, I mean how much multi tasking can one do?
It becomes cumbersome to type long messages.
In Nokia handsets you can log onto G-Talk minimize it and access opera mini or g-mail and in case you receive a message it pops up. This however is not the case with Sony handsets.
Sometimes there is a time gap in receiving messages.
If you are chatting and receive a call GPRS goes on a hold and so do the messages but as soon as the call get disconnected you will get the messages.
Since the day I downloaded the application I have been hooked on to it. The thought that you can get connected in a matter of seconds is too tempting and that is the reason you keep seeing me popping in & out now & again;-)
*GPRS Cost. Please take full information on this before using the application, nahin to i'll be blamed for the increased bill;)
*
It however becomes an addiction & am trying get de-addicted and will be seen online less:-D but whenever am online please remember this review & bear with me of am slow in replying or getting disconnected again & again;-)
So what are you thinking, go download the application and show your company that nothing can stop you from being in touch with your friends.
~Trivia~
There is a valentine version of the application floating around. It’s a sweet one, the green round buttons appear as green hearts & the red button(bole to busy status) appears as red hearts, how misleading, people who want to keep you away are the ones for whom your heart beats;-)
And this one is for a friend, in whom I have found a great friend & confidant. Have bonded with him on G-Talk only and he is now one special friend for me. I hope you do read this….this one is for you.
