Extremely funny at times with hundred percent femimist views, Girl Alone is a book chick-lit. I like the yellow, wellow cover with cough syrup, spoon and a parrot! Brilliant cover with artistic value by Hanna Wistrand!! The title is too provocative for a male and so fall prey to it. I was so impressed by the writing style of Rupa Gulab in the beginning. Coloured with lot of thoughts and fun it was a real nice experience in the first many chapters. I come to read a review at that point where the reviewer was not that satisfied with the product and I was wondering why where I was reserving a five star for the book! Never mind, I didn't had to wait for long to understand why. The chapters that followed were less enthusiastic, fun was deserted and the protagonist lost logic all along and acted like a dumb if not super dumb. The book cover promised the book as, "An Irresistible blend of satiric wit, romance (not of the mushy kind) and saucy tips on surviving single in the city...", but sadly the book is nothing of that sort from the middle point, if there is a point like that. The first chapters and last chapters are nearly contrasting with regard to reading experience, thoughts and style. If this is the way the author asks single ladies to stand for themselves in a city, I feel pity. As the last impression is the lasting impression, the lasting impression is not that tasty and yes, I need a cough syrup with little alcohol in it to get a sound sleep.
Reading english novels, ability to solve cross word puzzles and deliver grounding quotes on right occassions...Aarti is prey for these. She thinks and believes that these are the signs of intellect and no doubt she is intellect. In the process she fails to give colours to the emotions of heart and the purpose of life. She being a follower of circumstances succumbs to pressures and concedes with what life gives her than achieving what is capable of getting. In this sense, the protagonist fails the author or is it the other way around? When the lonely girl returns without achieving anything and losing everything we have our consolation that she learned from the city life and is going to live a happy life afterwards. At the end we feel sympathetic with the protagonist as she is yet to learn what is life but preach to the world, her world is the real world, not knowing the parrot can only speak what is been taught. It is this wrong philosophy of the protagonist and decisions without any basic logic which fails the book and the author.
Girl Alone is purely an adult read and not recommended to boys and girls who are god fearing and under close watch of parents. The book is not recommended for readers from UK, as they may have to go for a confession soon after for their forefather's sin. And there is a statutory warning: Usage of quotes from the book in classrooms of workplace may get expulsion or a bad name, if you are yet to have one.
What works for the book is the fun, real fun at times. As usual I was reading the book while walking and at times I could not stop laughing while reading it and many a time people who walks besides me turn to see who this mad man is. To conclude, I can say, the book is good for light reading for adults, chick-lit. There is fun at times, especially in the early chapters. Lack of logic and attitude let down the book and lasting impression is not that good. The writer had got good talent, so if focused we can expect better books from her. For this book, I can give only 2.5 stars, thanks to the first few chapters.
