In an alarming case of ill-treatment by a teacher, a Class 2 student of St. Joseph School in Nelamangala was beaten by belt for not completing her homework in Bangalore.
The incident came to light when the 7-year-old girl returned home from tuitions on Tuesday, and her parents noticed bruises on her body. On being asked, she said that her tuition teacher, Latha, had beaten her for not doing the homework.
"We learned that Latha would beat students who were weak in studies, but the parents used to blame their own children, " an investigating officer was quoted as saying to The Hindu.
This may not be a rare case but this is the first time an official complaint has been registered, said the police official.
"But this is the first complaint we have received against the teacher. A case has been booked against her, " he said.
The 40-year-old teacher is on the run ever since.
Parents usually justify this assaulting behaviour of a teacher or themselves by blaming the weak child for "not studying" instead of making them understand. Sadly, it has become the norm in our society. This approach towards a weak/disinterested student needs to change.
Indian parents need to understand that beating the child is not a solution to everything. Hats off to the girl's parents who reported the teacher.
