You’re all set to buy a car that fits your budget, one that has attracted you by color and by looks and by everything you can point your finger at. But let me give you a few tips that’ll make your experience with your new car a rewarding, if not satisfying one:
First, take a walk around the car. Inspect it carefully. Check for any loss of paint or scratches. Look for anything that seems unfamiliar to you. Also, check for rust. Check the tyres. Most owners, while having their old cars sold, have new tyres on them which gives the inexperienced buyer a hassle-free mirror image of the car. Check for torn patches and check the tread. Also, check the tyre pressure and the spare tyre. Get into the car. Check every light including the battery indicator and the low-oil indicator. Check all external lights. Do this at night. Try out the indicator ligts, the head lamps and the brake lights. Check the shock absorbers and the suspension. Go to the shock absorber joint and push down hard. Now let go. Note the number of times the car bounces up an down. If it bounces more than twice, you’re looking at a car that was roughly used.
Next, open the hood. Check the engine oil. If it is clear and smooth, well and good. If the oil is dirty, the end result is extra emissions out of the tail pipe. Inspect the oil filter and the spark plugs. Badly worn-out plugs can decrease the life of the engine. Also check the battery and the battery water. Ask the owner for all the maintenance he’s done on the car. Check the maintenance bills yourself and check the parts on which the work was carried out. Now it’s test time. Take the car out on a test drive yourself but with the previous owner right beside you. Listen carefully for any unfamiliar noises that might indicate trouble. This is a good time to test the brakes. Race up and slam the brakes. If it takes longer to stop than you expect, the brake pads are worn down. Lastly, take the car to a mechanic you know. Let him check the car thoroughly. He’ll tell you if the car if definitely worth the amount you’re going to spend or if you should check the classifieds again. Trust his verdict. Try out these tips. Do them all .In the long run; you’ll end up with more change in you pocket and you’ll come out a winner at inspection time.
