!! BAAP, DADA, AUR BHAI SABKA BADLA LE LIYA !!. Review on Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2

Any story, when told in parts, expectations from the successor is always based on the bar set by its predecessor. Few weeks back I watched ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and found it quite a good movie, only problem was, it looked pale in comparison to ‘The dark Knight’. Same is the case with ‘Gangs of Wasseypur II’ GOW2: there are few aspects that make GOW2 a better movie than GOW1, but there are lot many aspects that make it pale in front GOW

Coming to the plot : Well, it starts right where part 1 left you. After the death of Sardar Khan(Manoj Bajpai) his elder son Danish(Vineet Kumar) takes the charge of business as well as the revenge thing(It’s impressive 10-15 minutes of screen space that he got), but it’s a shortlived one, as Sultan kills him as well and so comes the turn of Faizzal Khan(Nawazuddin Siddiqui) to take the reins in his hands and as it was with Sardar, Faizal also declares that taking the revenge of his father, grandfather and brother is his duty now (and I thought atleast he will keep the revenge thing seriously and will concentrate on killing Ramadheer singh rather than getting involved in all the world of Dhanbad and Wasseypur like Sardar did it in GOW1, but as they say ‘like father like son’, even he follows the same path).

Faizal murders Danish's killer, his very best friend (the one who cheat him during the killing of his father as well), set the record straight but then gets into the business of gang-giri and all, making a peace pact with Ramadheer Singh. Marries Mohsina (Huma Qureshi), his love interest of GOW, one who is ready to allow anything but with permission. Faizal gets lost in Mohsina and business, while plot gets lost in innumerable characters. There is sub-plot of Perpendicular, younger son of Sardar and his friend Tangent(interesting characterss and are names so just because they slit their victim with blades; one perpendicularly and other tangently); and then there is Definite(Zeishan Quadri), Sardar’s son from his other wife Durga (this character forms one of the most interesting character in the movie both in terms of his part as well as Zeishan performance). These two characters alongwith lot of others, keep the story ticking until one fine day Faizal takes the gun(sss), Definite alongwith him, and kills Ramadheer(only after an attack on himself, Apne pe aai to liya badla). . Definite remains alive after killing Faizal and so does the son of Faizal and the son of Ramadheer Singh i.e. J P Singh. AK may use these characters for GOW3 in times to come if he wants. But I feel, he better not, as he has already milked the cow more than required.

Performances : Nawazuddin Siddiqui(Faizal Khan) is the lead of GOW2 and has delivered his part well, but fails a bit in comparison to Manoj Bajpai’s act in GOW1, but I guess the problem here lies not with the actor but with the improper characterization, Faizal khan is not but Sardar khan was, so how could you expect the same effect from the actor. Vineet Kumar as Danish has done well and it was an injustice to cut short his part for mere 10 minutes(they were glorios though). Huma Qureshi is good and brings in some lightness in otherwise too voilent movie. Zeishan Quadri as Defiinite is the surprise package of GOW2, impresses a lot. Piyush Mishra is their only to keep the story forward and I guess that's the only reason he remains alive(Thank God atleast some remain Alive) otherwise who would have narrated the story. Richa Chadda got few good moments in starting few minutes and that’s it. Jameel Khan as Asghar Khan is hardly present. Even Tigmanshu Dhulia as Ramadheer Singh is present very rarely and seems to be kept only to be massacred in the end and complete the revenge. Pankaj Tripathi as Sultan is their and play a key role and plays it well, as well. So, the question is who took all the screen space, I can’t cover, there are too many to mention.

Good Thing about GOW2 is its pace. It moves so fast that you don’t get time to think what is happening all around. New characters come and by the time they make an impact and you really know them and start to enjoy, they are already dead. AK has very well knitted his various characters in the simple plot that he had.

Music is very good – not better than GOW1 but good esp ‘Kaala Re’(carry a very good beats and well picturized ) and "Electric Piya" remains with you. Background score fits well and follows the mood of part1. Screenplay is fine but dailouges are better.. again so witty and laughable ..Everyone in hall was rolling with laughters.

Then from 1980’s to 2009, GOW provides glimpses of technology as we walked through time; pagers, mobiles, guns, bigger guns, AK-47 and what not. Then there is parallel coverage of Cneema all along, be its DDLJ, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Munna Bhai.. in this sense, going by my age, its GOW2 that I can more relate myself too.

One dialogue that I really liked : Ramadheer Singh says“Shahid khan mara.. Sardar Khan mar gaya.. Jaante ho main ab tak zinda kyun..Kyuki main Cneema nahi dekhta….then there is long reference of people imitating Bollywood actors right from Dilip Kumar to Salman Khan and getting killed because of larger than life character they try to follow becoz of what they see in movies .. and atlast he say.. Jab tak Bharat mein Cneema hai.. Log Ch$tia bante rahenge” It was something like that, I guess, and filled the hall with roars of laughters…

Coming to bad things : Its quite unpredictable and viewer keep guessing who is gonna kill whom, as any one is killing anyone in GOW2 until there is no one left to be killed. Oops, is it good thing? Well it is till the interval and afterwards you start to get irritated by it. . Then there is lot of guns and blood and violence and this time it gets a little over the limit and create bit of headache and thats what you carry along with you when you leave the hall alongwith lot of appreciation, of course. . I guess, a creator can play around with its character but he needs to give some respect to its key characters.. that is something you see in GOW1 for the characters of Shahid as well as Sardar Khan.. but in GOW2 there is no respect even for the lead characters and they are brought to end just like that..as if just to conclude the story with no door left open.

Strict no for family and children and those who dislike violence and loudness and blood.

In the end, GOW2 is a worth watch movie for the genre it is made for i.e. those who love violence and crime dramas, above all lovers of good realistic cneema. In a nutshell, those who loved GOW1 will love GOW2 as well, and some may love it even more. I missed Manoj Bajpai big time, but there are others who made it sure to fill in the gaps. Its another master piece from AK…

One message for AK though, “Enough of Guns and Violence, Gaalis and Golis, try something light now, may be a children pick, if Vishal Bhardhwaaj can do it, then, why not Anurag Kashyap”
