I saw this film first in L.A in January 2000, while on holiday there. With all the hype that was around it over there at the time, I expected to enjoy it. I did, but dont expect it to be a comedy where you laugh every minute. It's a spoof film of the highest calibre with lots of in-jokes for followers of Star Trek and the like - and done in the cleverest of ways.
The cast of TV Show 'Galaxy Quest' - actors all - are booked for their biggest show of all to save an alien planet. Aliens come to hire their services as they had obviously beamed the shows up and assumed what they saw was real. So, reluctantly, the cast get sucked into going into space for real and taking on the roles of their characters for the biggest and realest performances of their lives.
Sound a bit naff - well it's not.
It's done very cleverly and with good direction and excellent Cast - Tim Allen (Home Improvement's Tim Taylor), Sigourney Weaver (Alien 1, 2, 3 etc - and in a blonde wig....???), Alan Rickman (Die Hard, Robin Hood etc) and so on. They carry the whole thing off well, but despite it's box office success in the US, it wasn't as well received over here in England.
I suppose it shows just where the true Star Trek fans are, I guess. But I'd recommend you check it out on Video or on DVD all the same.
