It was raining very heavily outside, as I sat by the window to watch Hyderabad being drenched in the water droplets, My pal called out and pulled me, proudly announcing his achievement of getting G I Joe tickets on opening week.
We went on to spend a good Saturday evening with sommers' most recent creation. The movie, was too good! If not better. I was surprised that it was stamped on and ridiculed by critics. And no wonder the movie took top spot in the Box office. :-)
The best thing about sommers is, he never takes time getting it started. He never keeps you waiting! If not very familiar about what this G I Joe actually is, a simple 2 minute lesson would do. ;-)G I Joe - Touted as "A Real American Hero" was an animated television series that went on for many years and episodes.(I personally liked a rain forest episode :-))
Very popular and highly acclaimed this deals about two sides-G I Joe and Cobra. One trying to destroy the governments and take over the earth and the other trying to save it. The best part of this Plot is, you have people from all around the world in both the sides. Macho american "kick-ass" marines and soldiers, Ninjas, Mad scientists... you name them you have them.
The versatality and the presence of a very large number of Heroes under the same "Brand-Name" working for good against many bad guys who come in all forms n sizes forms the specialty of the G I Joe concept. It s wat makes them different from other comics. The TV series was by itself a master piece.
This story deals starts with Duke and Ripcord being tested of their skills to be part of G I Joe for a special mission. (About Duke'e Hell-bound ex-girlfriend) Once all the flashbacks and 'awe' are over they start over the real thing-stopping an evil Technology-maker and his mad scientist from releasing a terribly armed-chemical that wipes out anything on contact with it in the lower atmosphere.
The movie spans out to quite a few areas on the globe like Egypt, USA, Artic regions, Japan, France. All the characters taking turns in this huge movie, crammed into 2 hours and 30 minutes. the screenplay keeps you glued to the edge of the seat as we are taken through the lives of as many as 20 people. the director has made sure everyone gets their share of "how I am here right now" thoughts and that makes this movie special.
Since a lot of information has been told in a very short span of time the movie races through time and never lets u even look into your watch, phone or even any cute girl nearby ;-) You miss a shot, u ll not only confuse over wats happening, you may also confuse over who s good and who s bad!! Actors have done their bit. Though the guy who played Duke could have done a lot better having so much of scope in the movie. His character loses life due to his non-emotive portrayal.
Dennis Quaid steals the show in every scene he appears, being one of the well-known faces in the movie. His portrayal of the patriotic General Hawk is majestic. Sienna Miller scores too well as the Baroness, though she looks more seductive than the original, you begin to doubt her 'escaping' skills as she s no Milla-Jovovich. There are some typical Stephen Sommers signature bits in this movie too. Some fresh. Some too repetitive
1.Good family-style humour all through the movie
2.Tooo hot babes in every female character
3.Heroine kissing almost every bad guy around
4.His favorites Brendan Frazer and Arnold Voslo(though I missed them since they appeared in guest roles)
5.Face changing-graphics(My god he never leaves it!)
6.A guy for comedy till the end of the movie
So leavin apart some age-old last-minute-world-saving techniques, which is something tried, tested and bored, this movie is worth your money!!!

Story and subject : 7/10
