This happened with me, and many more people who were having high volume transactions. My account was frozen on the pretext of'profile not verified'. Going by this argument, I was allowed to use the website for nearly 8 months without verification! I searched for freelancer fraud on Google, and realized that the list of victims is endless with one thing in common - once the transaction volumes go up, they block the funds withdrawal feature. Not surprisingly, only cash withdrawals are blocked from my profile, and not the deposits. It is still possible for a client to pay me - but the payments would get stuck on my profile.
My account was finally released, though I had lost a lot of deposits. Things were going fine till I was keeping limited levels of funds, but later they started another similar fraudulent practice -'chargeback'. This means, if at any point, they have a suspicion that the account of a buyer has a problem, his/her account will be deleted and the website will recover what he/she paid to the sellers till date. The project reversal might occur 10 days, 1 month, or even 5 years after the project was completed, and no justification of the problem will be provided. Even the 10% brokerage is lost to website. Thus, buyer loses 110%(plus account) seller loses 10% after he has spent a lot of time delivering the project, and the website earns 120% of the project cost. It looks like the CEO is not satisfied with the 10% it gets from freelancers and 10% from clients(total 20%), and is more interested in the entire 120% of project cost. Adding salt to the wounds, the customer care people also tease the freelancers by telling them to beg the clients(whose accounts were deleted, or who had never visited the website 5 years back) to pay them again(they had already paid once), since freelancer.com is not responsible for the transaction between freelancers and clients(but only responsible for extortion of project fee)
This problem started only recently(since the last few months back), and I lost hundreds of GBP to this scam. I no longer use this website, unless returning clients are interested to work on freelancer.com only.
