The most testing times for a nation is during wars. The economy suffers a slumpdown, people are killed and many are left homeless and hungry.
History has said that man has never achieved anything more wars, but has always lost his life, loved ones and fellow human beings. The great wars fought on the face of the earth had snatched away billions of people. Crops are destroyed, industries are demolished and unemployment renders. Is this what we expect from a war?
Even winners are losers in a war. But wars give us heroes, patriots, and is filled with drama and thriller. Hollywood movies feature such kind of heavily charged, and emotionally filled drama and action. The battlefield becomes the stage and some great acts are portrayed.
Here I will list my favourite five war movies of all time.
So get ready for the action.
5) The Bridge On The River Kwai 1957
The greatest war ever fought on the face of the earth is World War II. This war saw the rise of Hitler, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and the US Atomic attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was one of the most destructive wars of all time, and Hollywood used several real-life drama as the theme of their movies.
One of such movie is this great one. It is directed by the legend David Lean who also created an another epic called Lawrence of Arabia. This movie just breaks every bounds and emerges as a thrilling pack of entertainment.
The story is about British soldiers who are forced to build a railway bridge for their WWII Japanese captors, unaware of an allied mission to blow it up.
Again, Alec Guinness gives a terrific performance. He is my favourite actor of yesteryears.
This movie will remain in memories of many as the best war epic ever made.
4) Black Hawk Down 2001
This was the most horrifying battle ever fought by USA. They not only lost their men, but also lost several helicopters called Black Hawks. This war came out to be a total failure of the US peace keeping mission.
The story is about 123 elite U.S. soldiers who drop into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord but find themselves in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily-armed Somalis.
This war was called the first Urban War. It was fought within cities and towns of Somalia, rather than on battlegrounds.
Ridley Scott directs this movie beautifully. He is great form after his another great movie, Gladiator. Of the actors, I loved Ewan McGregor. And there are so many other actors in this movie.
A critically acclaimed war movie, which make you ask for more.
3) Schindler's List 1993
This movie is also based on World War II, but it has more drama than action. It takes us back to the Nazi era when Hitler dictated Germany and tortured the Jews.
The story is a man called Oskar Schindler, which is beautifully enacted by Liam Neeson, who uses Jews to start a factory in Poland during the war. He witnesses the horrors endured by the Jews, and starts to save them.
He prepares a list of Jews whom he wants to save. Amongst all of them there is just one child. This child is seen holding his hands on the posters of this movie.
This movie is completely Black & White, but it does contains many shades of emotions, love and courage.
The great director, Steven Spielberg directs this epic. Other actors included Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, and many more.
This is what I call a movie.
2) Braveheart 1995
Fight for freedom was never so glamorous and exciting as this one. This movie portrays patriotism and courage in a completely stylish manner.
The story is about William Wallace, a commoner, who unites the 13th Century Scots in their battle to overthrow English rule.
Mel Gibson plays the title role and is also the director of this superb movie. There is no doubt that this was his best acting and directing performance.
Filled with action, dialouges and emotions, Braveheart comes out to be a complete movie. It is beautifully picturised, and the scenic beauty is very well brought forward.
This one is surely amongst the best.
1) Saving Private Ryan 1998
Another World War II movie, but with a totally different taste and structure. This is the only war movie that moved me into tears. The picturisation of heroism and courage is worth an applause.
The story is, obviously, based on a World War II drama. US soldiers try to save their comrade, paratrooper Private Ryan, who's stationed behind enemy lines.
Steven Spielberg dishes out another directorial great. I am just speechless to praise Tom Hanks who plays Captain John Miller. He is just too good. I would like to just embrace him, if ever I get a chance to meet him. Matt Damon is Private Ryan. And there are so many other great actors in this movie.
There are several battle scenes that are heart-rendering. Body parts and blood-stained corpses are seen laid everywhere. This really gives a feeling of awe.
This movie really tells us that war are fought for no good.
It is a very touching movie.
So, I complete my list. Like before, I would like to mention some other noteable war movies:
Lawrence of Arabia
Apocalypse Now
The Great Escape
No Man's Land
and many more.
War movies are just too good, but we do not need any more actual wars.
What say people? Ain't I right?
