The Whose Who of Hollywood (According to Me)

So what is it that makes an actress above the ordinary? What makes an actress sexy without being slutty? What gives an actress class and sophistication? What makes an actress memorable? What makes an actress so desirable that they get payed millions upon millions to stand around and bat their pretty little eyelids?

Well if I knew, I certainly wouldn’t be a middle class citizen with nothing better to do then write about famous actresses…I’d be one:-).

But here is a list of people who have captured my mind in some way or another. A group of woman who certainly deserve plaudits for their hard work and dedication to their art. A group of woman who I’m sure you all know, simply because they are worth remembering.

5) Marilyn Munroe:

The sexy, vivacious blonde captured the hearts of the American people in the 50’s and 60’s. How so? I think it had something to do with her limpid blue eyes coupled with that sultry, husky voice. I love watching her act. Admittedly, most of her roles are kind of similar as she plays the brainless blonde, gazes adoringly at the camera, croons a smooth song, seduces a rather ordinary looking chap while wearing clothes that complement her famous body perfectly. But why do I like her? Simple really – she’s fun to watch. Movies like ‘Gentlemen prefer blondes’ and ‘How to marry a millionaire’ are great to watch for some basic lighthearted comedy…and there also are some useful tips to be picked up :) I also find it amusing that this world famous bimbo in actual fact had an IQ that was high enough to make her eligible for mensa, and that history’s most famous blonde was actually born a brunette. Amazing…isn’t she?

4) Nicole Kidman:

The movie that made her a favorite of mine was undoubtedly ‘The Others’, she was truly amazing in the small budget thriller as she played her part with the utmost maturity and skill. She also shows diversity in her acting as she mastered her roles in movies such as ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’ (if you didn’t like this movie, don’t blame Kidman, it’s director Baz Luhrman’s style of movie that takes getting used to). As for sex appeal…well she has been noted down as being with Robbie Williams (eewww), Jude Law (no sane woman would hesitate with this possibility – well apart from that whole thing with his wife…) and currently with Lenny Kravitz (certainly a very desirable choice). So for looks and talent, Nicole does dazzle.

3) Catherine Zeta Jones:

She has got to be a one of the most beautiful woman in the world…not only that, she is an extraordinarily talented actress who can slip into a varied range of characters and make them her own. About every guy I know fell in love with her in ‘The mask of Zorro’ where she played the beautiful yet spirited young maiden, however I fell in love with her in ‘Chicago’ where she play the notorious, sultry Velma Kelly. From memory, she was selected as the fourth most beautiful woman in the world according to America’s People magazine. A position well deserved. She dresses very stylishly and acts very gracefully as she struts her stuff on the red carpet or stands to receive yet another accolade for her acting talents. One thing I don’t like her about her is her husband. Of course I have never met him, however he apparently demanded she lose a lot of weight before their marriage as he didn’t want a fat wife walking down the aisle, and also made her have plastic surgery on her eyes because he felt they needed to be bigger. Regardless of that, she is an extraordinary talent.

2) Dame Judy Dench:

Bet you didn’t see this one coming :-), but I have always admired her. She plays all her roles so darn well that I don’t think anyone can find flaw in her acting. She makes each and every character her own and I honestly think Elizabeth I could play herself as well has Dame Dench did in ‘Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown’. Even when she is playing a cranky old woman, she acts with such sensitivity that all in the audience feel a sense of compassion towards her, and in her subtle way she makes it clear to her viewers why her character was so hard-bitten. It takes considerable talent to achieve this type of ovation. She also played her role in the movie ‘Chocolat” with a rare talent not often seen in movies these days as she slipped in to the role and defined Armande as the straight speaking, sharp tongued old rogue who had a heart of gold. As for sex appeal…well Johnny Depp claimed after the filming of Chocolat that he was in love with Ms Dench, and any woman who has the ability to capture the heart of this spunk certainly has some tricks up her sleeves.

1) Audrey Hepburn:

How could any review on this subject be complete without the acknowledgment of this wonderful woman??? She defined beauty in her era, a style of exquisiteness that lingers to this day. Her remarkable acting left nothing to be desired. In every movie she has been in she has displayed extraordinary class and sophistication, whether it be playing the heir to the throne (A Roman Holiday), or a ‘heartless guttersnipe’ (My Fair Lady), she consistently defined the roles. My favorite movie of hers is a relatively unknown, low budget suspense thriller called ‘Wait Until Dark’. Here she plays a blind woman whose house is being searched by dacoits from the underworld who exploit the fact that she is blind as they search for the booty they desire. The story line was magnificent, as was the acting of the entire cast, but Ms Hepburn was dazzling. This was no easy role to master and any ordinary actress may have made this movie dull with low grade acting or stupid with over the top gestures, but Ms Hepburn made this movie unforgettable. Men fell in love with her because of her large brown eyes (eyes which have been compared to just about every creature imaginable), and woman were overwhelmed with jealousy has they watched her glide down red carpets sporting the latest fashions while being followed by a hoard of men.

A tremendous actress, by all accounts – a very lovely lady, creator of timeless movie classics… Ms Hepburn is definitely my favorite.

Very interested to hear what you think of my selection. Please do comment and tell me your favorites if you get the time. How hope you found this to be an interesting read.
