Most recent fashion guide from an American teen
May 24, 2001 10:15 PM 15106 Views

I am one to be a bit big on fashion, although I don't splurge on shopping sprees and spend thousands in a day.  I'm pretty sure these trends apply to the whole of the United States, with teens abroad.  If not, then this should be an interesting read for most of you.  I love how these trends seem to pass over twenty years from the 70s or 60s to now.  This year seems to have an 80s thing going on.  YIKES!

For Girls.

Glitter - glitter glitter everywhere!  On your eyes, your shoulders, your arms, your tummy.there's not many places girls don't put glitter.  I, myself like to put it on my eye lids and shoulders when I'm going out with friends.  But not much, because it can get irritating when it gets all over the place.  Besides, I've heard guys don't like it.

Flared Jeans - This has actually lasted quite a while.  There's nothing that says the 1970s more than bell bottoms, and somehow they came back.  I admit, I wear'em.  They're actually pretty cute.  It flatters your figure(if you have one).  I particularly like the new jeans that have the studs down the side.

Clear Lip Gloss - I've fallen in the trap of this trend.  I love the wet, glossy look(that is, if you don't put too much on).  The latest addition to this trend is penciling in some lip liner, then applying lip gloss.  It gives you a nice, simple look.

Capri Pants - Ok, now there is a difference between Capri Pants and High Waters.  Capri Pants go to the knee and are a tight fit.  I like wearing these because the dress code at school permits shorts that are above fingertip length(when putting arms to your sides).  My legs are very long and I've gotten in trouble at school for shorts.  Capris are nice because they're long enough and still suited for summer weather.  They don't look bad either.

High Waters - most recently is the High Water(pants)trend.  I don't know if that's what it's actually called, but if you've seen girls walking around with pants that are just an inch or two above the ankle, but worn as though they're Capris, then you know what I'm talking about.  I like the straight-legged ones, but the flared legged high waters look funny.  I don't particularly like this trend.

Corn Rolled/Rows Hair - alright, for ages rappers and African Americans have been wearing their hair in corn rolls/rows.  Corn rolls are the'white' version of it.  Since we can't do it the same way, we have to roll pieces of our hair put it in a rubber band, and do the same with another piece of hair(going all the way across the top of the head, leaving hair hanging in the back).  I haven't done this with my hair because I don't have the right texture to my hair to do it.

Flip Flops - Wearing summer style shoes all year round are an odd and quirky little trend created by today's generation.  Girls wear jeans, shorts, and skirts with flip flops that match in color.  This lets girls show off dainty(sometimes LOL) feet with painted nails.  The whole summer/beach look is also big(especially where I am, I live 30 miles from the North Carolina coast).

For Guys.

'Ice' - Ice is a slang term for silver or diamond jewelry.  Most African American males, and a few white males very much enjoy showing off their'ice.'  Guys, really, what a trend you've got goin'!  (LOL)

Baggy EVERYTHING - Guys wear baggy everything.  They can't even tie their shoes, they let them hang loose on their feet.  Personally, it grosses me out when guys wear their jeans halfway down the back of their legs, exposing boxers or even tightie whities.  Come on now!  That's just nasty.  They also wear baggy shirts that are sometimes long enough to cover those boxers.

Baseball Caps Covering'Rags' - A trend mostly started by rapper Nelly, every guy who has taken on the hip hop type personality wears what looks like(a part of) women's panty hose on their head, covered by a baseball cap worn tipped up and to the side of the head.  Complicated, I know.  But just find a picture of Nelly and you'll know what I'm talking about.

Flip Flops - YUCK!  Guys have the most disgusting feet I've ever seen!  I, personally, wish guys had never taken this trend from the girls.  Males just grow the ugliest feet, hairy and dirty.ew.  Just stick to tennis shoes please!

Anything Sporty & Name Brand - Fubu, Nike, Timbaland boots, Adidas, Abercombie & Fitch(for the rich kids), Old Navy, Gap, etc etc.  Sighs  I know some girl who only buys name brand sporting goods(volleyballs, soccer balls, knee pads).  What a waste!

Ahh their precious cars! - Guys and their cars.  Wow.  Well, almost every person who drives at my school is lucky to own vehicles that are only a few years old(if that).  They also spend their hard earned money(flipping burgers at Mickey D's, oh there's nothing like it) on stereo systems that blast hip hop music, vibrating the grounds of my high school.  Very dark tinted windows that turn into a shiny tint are very popular.  Custom low-rider rims(bites knuckles with sarcasm) are rare but wanted by every guy.  Hondas and Chevy trucks are the cars you'll find most in my high school's student parking lot.

In Conclusion

I would love to see more reviews of fashion trends for teens from different parts of the world.  If anyone will participate and provide me with a good read, I'd be much obliged!  All these trends courtesy of a high school in Eastern North Carolina.
