Movies come and movies go. Some make me search for a vomit bag and some stay in my mind as a classic. This review is dedicated to those classics. Those movies which have that special touch and combination of good acting, good direction, and most rare in Hindi Movies, a good plot! Yes, the story line which most directors like Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali just twist and turn to make a blockbuster. The following are my favourites(tell me in the comments section whether I forgot any praise worthy) in random order, because I can’t tell which is better than the other! Lets have a look at them!
1) Bombay
Director: Mani Ratnam
How can my list be there without a MANI RATNAM movie? He is my favourite director of the 90’s and otherwise with Hrishikesh Mukherjee! Bombay is a very sensitive movie about the riots that were going on in Bombay during ‘92 and ’94. The first half of the movie was slow showing the romance taking place between Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala. The second half was pretty speedy as we see two parents searching madly for their twin sons. Manisha Koirala has never looked this beautiful in a movie for sure.
Direction: Mani Ratnam- 5/5
Acting: Arvind Swamy- 4/5 Manisha Koirala- 5/5
Plot: 5/5
2) Ghulam
Director: Mahesh Bhatt and Vikram Bhatt(thanks crazyplaywright)
This was a very odd choice for me, but I really like this movie basically for Aamir Khan’s acting. This was the first time he played anything but a loverboy which was a proof he excels at any role. Rani Mukherjee is the actress of the movie, but I don’t really think so because she barely has 4 or 5 scenes in the movie and the songs to fill up including the super duper hit one- “E…… Kya Bolti Yu?” She really has not been given her due. The theme of the movie is also very decent about a boy who’s his brother’s ghulam(slave) and is always doing wrong things unknowingly. Rajit Kapoor playing Aamir’s brother also is very good.
Direction: Mahesh Bhatt: 4/5
Acting: Aamir Khan: 5/5 Rani Mukherjee: 4/5 Rajit Kapoor(thanks Lavanya): 4/5
Plot: 4/5
3) Zahkm
Director: Mahesh Bhatt
Lo! Mahesh Bhatt again with Zakhm. This movie was also very brilliant. It had the same theme like Bombay about hindu-muslim riots but these both films were very different! Again, Ajay Devgen impresses me very much as an actor. I’ve seen this movie long time back so I can’t say that much about it, but one thing is for sure, I think this was Mahesh Bhatt’s best movie ever!
Direction: Mahesh Bhatt: 5/5
Acting: Ajay Devgan: 5/5 Sonali Bendre:4.5/5
Plot: 5/5
4) Roja
Director: Mani Ratnam
Roja, the story of a woman who is confident to save her husband who is a hostage is a brilliant movie. This movie has made Mani Ratnam titled as one of the best directors of India. It was also Rehman’s first musical score which was beautiful too! It was right from the heart! I really love this movie and I feel it’s a must watch.
Direction: Mani Ratnam: 5/5
Acting: Arvind Swamy 5/5 Madhoo: 5/5
Plot: 4/5
And the time has come for me to tell my most favourite movie! The one that has captured my heart. The best!
And the OSCAR goes to…………………….
Anjali! “Anjali Anjali, Meri Pyaari pyaari Anjali. Anjali Anjali, Meri Aankhoin ka tara Anjali.” Numero Uno Mani Ratnam comes again. He didn’t even leave children. Never has a movie ever EVER made me cry, but the first time I saw Anjali I got tears in my eyes. I think this is the most emotional movie ever, simple, yet a masterpiece. The way the children are shown singing and dancing to the emotional moments between Anjali and her family to the last scene where she sadly dies is handled ever so beautifully by Ratnam Sir. I think this is his best film. Full MARKS!
Direction: Mani Ratnam: 5/5
Acting: Everybody is 5/5 ESPECIALLY Shamili as Anjali who just steals the show.
An Important Note: Most my favourite actresses like Mahdhuri Dixit(Nene) or Rani Mukherjee or even Kajol and many other actors have not entered this list except maybe Aamir Khan(Ghulam). I think the reason is that the films they do don’t have the sentivity or good plot like the ones I have mentioned.
Some of my all time favourites are Mili, Angoor, Saathiya, and many more!
I await your comments eagerly!
