Just today morning I logged on to Mouthshut to check out few rvu?s and I found Tanmay?s rvu on 5 best Bollywood movies of 2004. I had been thinking of writing a rvu since quite some time now but due to time constraints and stuff I couldn?t really find a topic to write on. But I think I can write on this one and that is why I am now listing my opinion/selection on 5 best Bollywood movies of 2004.
Note: The movies I have selected may not be the common choices. But I found them deserving from others and that is why I have included them. My list includes movies some of which weren?t commercially successful, having different subjects but are well deserving in my opinion.
Finally numbers don?t suggest ranks they are just for ordering.
Top 5:
1)Swades
If I were to choose between SRK of Swades and SRK of VZ/Main Hoon Na whom would I choose? The answer SRK of Swades. After a long long time I did see SRK in full fledge motion portraying a character which will remain in heart of many for a long time. No hams no overacting just pure and simple Mohan Bhargav was played by SRK with utmost perfection. Frankly speaking after seeing VZ I had no expectations from King Khan for performing his role in Swades. I had thought he will continue the same acting or should I say over-acting which he has been doing since K2H2 but I was utterly surprised when I saw Swades. This is his performance of a life-time. Director Ashutosh Gowariker strikes once again after Lagaan. The movie may not have been successful but it has got tremendous appreciation. Mouthshut recommendations suggest it too.
2)Lakshya
Once again not a successful movie at the box-office but in my opinion quite deserving to be in top 5. Don?t raise your eye-brows on me for selecting Lakshya. The subject, the treatment and the direction of the movie was perfect. Ok there were a few hiccups in the initial stages in Hrithik?s acting as a confused youth but then it was all his acting which made this movie so good. One of my friends told me that at recent awards function even SRK was surprised that Lakshya didn?t get a nomination in the best film category. And they nominated Murder for best movie? Farhan Akthar proved that he is a good director and DCH was not a stroke of luck. Not to mention Hrithik?s acting and the subject of how a confused guy becomes a dynamic army personnel the transition in the move was well shown.
3)Ab tak Chappan
Nana at his best. Based on the life of Encounter specialist Ab Tak Chappan is as deserving as any movie to be in the top movie list. Might not have been liked by the fairer sex (and might not feature in best movie list of many) but then these are the kind of movies which suggest that the Bollywood movie making scenario is changing from simple love stories and singing around trees to real hard facts of life. The movie was produced by none other than Ram Gopal Varma and it was the directorial debut of Shimmit Amin. There weren?t any songs in the movie; not even item-numbers. Performance wise Nana was at his best while his colleagues also supported him well. Ab Tak Chappan has 100% recommendation at MS.
4)Ek Hasina Thi
Another movie that bombed at box-office. And I hope my rvu is not bombed by u guys for such a selection. 2004 saw many different kinds of movies adapted from different themes. After DCH Saif was on a high and Urmila well, she wanted a come-back. So the stage was set for both of them in Ek Hasina Thi, another of RGV?s productions jointly ventured with Kay Sera Sera. While promos had raised curiosity I didn?t expect such performances from Saif and Urmila as well as the director. A girl who is set out to seek revenge on her so called boyfriend who had told her to accept a crime which she didnt do is the plot of the movie in a single line. Roughly around 2 hours duration of the movie and no nonsensical songs made this movie a good watch and well deserving to be in the top list.
5)Khakee
A RajKumar Santoshi direction was Khakee and it had all in the ingredients for being a complete entertainer. It had rocking performances from Big B, some good one liners and comedy acting by Akshay Kumar and a rocking performance in a negative role by Ajay Devgan. But this movie also didn?t get the appreciation it deserved. I think the movie was an average at the box-office but it was an awesome movie and rightly deserves a spot in the top movie list. Basically the movie had a plot to bring a so- proclaimed traitor to Mumbai for presenting him in the court so that he can give out his connections. But then there are some people who are there to stop him and how our Khakee team deals with them is what the rest of the movie comprises of. I am not writing any spoilers here so its good that I stop writing more about the movie.
O.K guys I have reached the end of my selection. I have left out movies like Hum Tum, Yuva, Fida, Devetc but well I had to select only 5. I am sure the question which might have risen in your mind would be Why not Veer-Zaara. The simple answer is I didn?t expect such movie from Yash Chopra who made a comeback after such a long time. In my opinion the movie was average and the performances were not upto the mark so it isn?t included in my list.
