To start with, this one is just not meant for families and it is not a remake of The Godfather. Rajkumar Santoshi after a series of commendable movies such as Ghayal, Damini, Khakee, Andaz Apna Apna, delivers a complete letdown. Amitabh Bachchan is the only saving grace of the film.
The story is of two families, Viren Sahai’s (Amitabh) and Shekhar’s (Akshay). Viren is an underworld don and Shekhar, a middle class simple guy who owns a fast food restaurant. In an incident, Shekhar is killed by Viren accidentally and Shekhar’s brother Aryan (Aryeman) seeks revenge from Viren. The rest of the movie revolves around this fight between Viren and Aryan and what follows after this is blood, blood and more blood. The violence tends to get a bit too much and too red. After Zinda, this one’s not for the faint-hearted again.
Other actors are not significant enough to be mentioned. Akshay does a good job in his limited appearance. Aryeman has a future, but can act better. Amitabh is as usual flawless and watching him holding a cigar in style is a visual treat.
Family is also the launch pad of Aryeman, son of Keshu Ramsay, the producer. Some parts of the movie actually appear more like a promotional campaign for him. You can say that this movie is truly by the family for the family, but not so much for the audience.
