Ek Main Aur Ek Tu is a Bollywood love story. So basically it means that there is no story. Boy meets girl, love, breakup, love. The same stencil which is more ancient than the Indian map’s stencil we all use in our school’s geography examinations to draw the map of India (Do kids still use it these days? I have no idea.)
I watched this film in one of the strategically located multiplexes in Mumbai on a Friday late afternoon show. And there were only about 20-25 patrons. Friday, Love story from a leading production house in India, A-grade lead pair, Valentine’s Day atmosphere; and 25 viewers!! May be that show was an aberration.
I still recommend this film to people who like Bollywood movies. And this is mainly because of the good performance from the lead pair, some good dialogues, solidly written character of the lead actor and some good speedy songs (Auntyji being the highlight).
The length of this film is about 2 hours, and it runs well till the interval. Post interval too, when it is chugging along well, suddenly the writer probably remembered that there had to be some twist. So there is some altercation between the love birds over a petty issue. To me this was the only ridiculous part of the film. I mean, two 25+ independent people who have spent significant time in US separating over a kiss!? Are you F kidding me??
The ending of this film may not appeal to most people. It is sort of left hanging. Such hanging climaxes make very good sense in thrillers and mysteries (if they are cleverly thought out, that is). But definitely not in love stories. But I was ok with it. My only problem was that the end leaves Imran Khan’s character looking a loser right from start to end. But it is the writer and director’s right and call.
Overall, this is an enjoyable film that rides on the atmosphere around its release. Recommended for a decent timepass for 2 hours.
