I had my initial reservations about this movie and the promos didnt excite me too much. Somehow I was getting the impression(and I was really right when I saw the movie) that what the promoI was are playing up is really what the film will have to offer and NOTHING MORE.
Ek main aur ek tu with that breezy title and the memories of a sprighly 70s romcom song will still bring a smile to your lips. Hard to say the same about this film. The film HAS NO PLOT and thats really sad because without a strong story and a strong screenplay any film can only maybe garner the first day tickets due to its overhyping but will fail to hold audience interest thereafter.
Well if the director is arrogant enough to shoot a SLICE OF LIFE story and have no twists in the story and nothing to tell by way of a dramatic tale then he better support his vision with ROCK SOLID LEAD PERFORMANCES. That is a tough menu to offer considering the top billing goes to Imraan Khan who while being an average actor has managed to remain just that, AVERAGE. He fails to bring any nuances or depth to the character he plays and remains deadpan throughout.
Its Kareena who salvages the show to a large extent. She shines in a tailor made role that makes her sound bindaas and wise at the same time, without her trying hard and she looks charming along with it. But the problem is that ITS EK MAINAUR EK TU. The 2 main leads have a lot of footage and ae expected to deliver sterling performances and when that does not happen in a balanced manner, the film becomes slow, boring and tests your patience.
It begins breezily enough and the first part is a fun ride with a lot of Las Vegas exuberance thrown in. The cinematography and the treatment in the first 40 mins is very capable and eye catching. Imraan's parents are delightful but then why does one get a feeling of deja-vu when one sees the preening socialite Ratna Pathak and the straightlaced, stern Boman reprimanding their only son to follow in their disctums. They are great actors but their roles are so been there seen them before that their freshness and talent is LOST.
Imraan is the sore spot in this thankfully short 2 hour panorama and its quite unbearable to watch him and make mincemeat out of a meaty role that would have really flowered under a more spontaneous actor. this film demands, needs spontaneity and the stiffness of Imraan brings the show down majorly.
The Braganza family is cute but the absence of any known faces in that jars. they are all new actors and don't get enough time to prove themselves. When the length of the role is short, one should get the cameos done by known faces. That ensures an instant connect with the audience.
The music is quite enjoyable and salvages the otherwise mundane show.
Its a rehash of JAB WE MET, ANJAANA ANJAANI and many other dialogue based interactive films and one gets the BEEN THERE, SEEN THAT feel all through the movie. The end, though different does not appeal. why does Kareena who has slept with 6 men till now and finally finds the perfect man, show no feeling of romance for him. It looks forced and unrealistic and she comes across as a bimbo who made mistakes earlier and continues to do so in her choice of the right man.
OK for a 1 time watch, otherwise boring and repetitive. Has nothing fresh to offer. Catch the promo. Its all the 2 hours will give you in a nutshell.
