Dum Laga keHaisha: What to say about this film. Its beautifully simple and simply beautiful. It is one of those films where I really am at loss for words to write this review.
Based in the 1990s to early 2000 where Kumar Sanu was at the peak of his career. You might wonder how Kumar Sanu came into the picture, its coz our Hero; Ayushman Khurana is a Kumar Sanu fan.
To put in simple words, "Dum Lagake Haisha" is about discovering Love by overcoming your longing of a fairy tale during the six months trial period before divorce. Confused? Lemme elaborate a bit more.
This is the story of Prem Kumar(Ayushman Khurana) who is 10th fail, is a huge Kumar Sanu fan and yearns to marry a barbie doll aka slim & sexy girl{Nothing new in that. Almost every guy wishes to marry such a girl no matter how he himself is and vice versa:). However, women are more realistic in these matters} and Sandhya(Bhumi Pednekar) who is B.Ed, head strong but plump(like me:P). The marriage is solemnized against the wishes of Prem. The reason is obvious, he doesn't like her because she is fat. She tries to win his love by showing him english film, buying and wearing a satin nightie etc; but fails because her husband detests her.
She applies for divorce from her husband when he insults her coz of her weight in front of his friends during his friend's wedding. However, as the law states, you need to give it a shot for 6months post which, if thr is still incompatibility, the divorce will be granted. Its during these 6months that they discover about each other and the main reconciliation is the contest called "Dum Lagake Haisha" where you need to lift ur spouse on your back and run on the sand with hurdles in between. That's when he realizes that he loves his wife.
What I loved about this movie is the simplicity with which it is made. The way they quarrel, the way she tries her best to win her husband's love, accepting the fact that she is plump/fat and this fact cannot be changed, the way she knows her husband detests her for being fat yet loving him unconditinally and silently; all these are portrayed as it should be, very realistic. There is no fluff, no acting as in acting. The performances are very realistic and straight from the heart.
What according to me it conveys; It conveys that for a woman, as long as her husband is by her side mentally, physically, emotionally and sentimentally, she can withstand any obstacle that comes her way, provided her husband loves and accepts her the way she is and by this I mean fat or any other thing. And if the husband loves her the way she is, she will make sure her man wins not only a racing contest but also the race of life.
I can totally relate to this film is coz I am fat or plump and to be honest I care a damn coz I love myself the way I am:)
A Mustest Mustest Watch Film. In the movie rate-o-meter I rate #DumLagakeHaisha a 6/5 or a 11/10.
