From reading the other reviews on this movie, I realized that not many people enjoyed this movie. I can't say it was what I was expecting but it was not that bad! The movie stars Sushmita Sen, Fardeen Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ishita Sharma, indeed a star cast. I should say that the first three are some of the favorites in Trinidad. Naturally, when I heard that a Bollywood movie was about to be filmed in Trinidad, I was pretty excited, and even more so when I found out who the actors were. I am sure it was a pretty exciting time for those involved in the shooting in 2007. The film also featured Trinidad's most popular East Indian dance group, the Clico Shiv Shakti Dancers.
A little backgorund on Trinidad and Tobago: We are a twin island Republic located at the bottom of the Caribbean chain of islands, off the coast of Venezuela. Most days are bright and sunny, others are cloudy and rainy. The people are naturally warm and friendly. The Caribbean is described as a 'melting pot' because of the variety of different races living here, all of whom are descendants from the days of slavery and indentureship. Anyway, enough of that.
This is a review of a movie, not of my country, and I do ask you to please forgive me for rambling on.I was not too pleased with the plot which goes like this: Tej Danraj aka Donsai (FK), must marry a young girl from a village, Samarpreet Kapoor (IS), in order to access his inheritance. He travels to the village with his lawyer, and marries the girl. He returns to Trinidad without a single glance back. After months of waiting, Samarpreet decides to go to Trinidad to find her husband. When she sees him with another woman, she is heartbroken, and leaves. She is hit by Shimmer's (SS) car and is taken in by her. Shimmer learns of Donsai's marriage and is most displeased with his actions. She gives Samarpreet a makeover and Samarpreet becomes Samara. Donsai does not know that Samara is his wife and he is attracted to her. (This is just by the way, but I can tell you that Trinidadian girls and boys do not fall for each other based on looks alone!).
Anyway, a bit later Samara learns of Shimmer's boyfriend Pavan Raj Gandhi aka PRG (SRK), who makes his entrance halfway through the movie, at the end of a dance sequence for Karva Chauth celebrations (which, by the way, is not usually celebrated in Trinidad). On arriving in Trinidad PRG realizes that Shimmer is not ready to commit completely to him and wants to leave, but not before going on a cruise to Tobago, (an hour away from Trinidad by plane, and a bit longer by boat (the scenic route :D) ). The northern coast of Trinidad is particularly breathtaking so I would not blame them for going on a cruise! It's around here that PRG declares his love for Shimmer on a cruise ship and Samara agrees to go on a date with Donsai. After the cruise, PRG is about to leave but is chased down by Shimmer, who proposes to him at the airport. On her date with Donsai, Samara reveals she is his wife and everyone is happy. As we say in Trinidad, 'Crick, crack, monkey break ee (his) back, on a rotten pomerac. (A pomerac is a reddish, pear shaped fruit)
People might be inclined to say it is Trinidadian trash, and I did read that in a review (not on MS), but this sort of thing does not happen in Trinidad. It is just a movie, and while the plot and acting could not have been awesome, the movie itself did a lot for the country. It was a hit earlier this year in cinemas, as people kept going to theatres to see it.
I love the music, composed by Lalit Pandit, of Jatin-Lalit fame. My favourite song is of course Tu Jo Jaanle sung by Sonu Nigam. However. the music was nothing spectacular, and both album and movie were below my expectations. I also think they did not quite do justice to the scenery as there are many beautiful places in both islands where some scenes could have been shot.
I am not expecting great comments, but please let me know what you think. My title is not that creative but I can't seem to think what else to put!
