So once again I went to the pre-release screening of a movie this Thursday; namely the much awaited Dostana and many of you must be thinking that it`s just a gay movie or that Karan Johar is trying to prove himself versatile or that it`s just a skin show by Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham but there`s much more too it.Yes...it`s a movie which is very GAY at heart and even that`s true that Priyanka and John have exposed their bodies a lot in this movie (especially the latter) BUT there is much more to this movie which makes it a winner all the way.....
The movie tells the story of two guys, Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan), a male nurse and Kunal (John Abraham), a fashion photographer. Both of them are looking for a good place to live in and both end up going to a certain apartment which has been advertised to be let out on rent. The woman they meet at the apartment (Sushmita Mukherjee) tells them that they can`t stay there because the occupier of the apartment is a girl and she won`t be easy two have two guys living with her. Sameer and Kunal believing that the woman is referring to herself tell the woman that they are gay so that she lets them stay there. They then find out that the occupier of the house is that woman`s niece, Neha (Priyanka Chopra).
When both Sameer and Kunal see Neha for the first time they get attracted to her and realise their stupidity in acting gay but that is the only choice for them if they wish to stay there. Upon their acting gay, both are allowed to stay as tenants in that apartment with Neha. Thereafter, several confusions follow because of Sameer and Kunal`s acting gay, most notably Sameer`s mom (Kirron Kher) being shocked at finding out that her son is gay. On the other hand, Neha is shocked to know that upon the retirement of her boss (Boman Irani) from the fashion magazine company where she works, she has not been nominated as her boss` successor.Instead, Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) is announced as the new boss of the company. However, after getting lots of encouragement from Sameer and Kunal she decides to do her best at work and slowly and steadily she starts getting attracted towards Abhimanyu. Sameer and Kunal feel threatened by Abhimanyu and have to decide how to get Neha rid of him. Also, they have to compete with each other to gain Neha. How will they break the relationship between Abhimanyu and Neha? How will they tell Neha that they are not gay? Which of them, Sameer and Kunal will get Neha if they remove Abhimanyu from her life. For that, you have to watch Dostana...
Although, the plot of the film is nothing very new, except for the very important gay element in the movie (which is something rare in mainstream Bollywood movies), it still manages to keep you glued to your seats because of its fresh treatment and because of some well-written and well-executed scenes, spontaneous performances and some clever dialogues. The film is basically a humorous one with a little emotional content (which, BTW, doesn`t look melodramatic at all). New director Tarun Mansukhani has done a good job. The film is highly entertaining and despite being pretty lengthy doesn`t bore the viewer. Some of the best scenes are the one where Abhishek Bachchan tells Priyanka and her aunt about his 'love story' with John in Venice (this one is hilarious...especially where Abhishek runs towards John like a girl), where Boman Irani (a gay/Priyanka`s boss) comes to Priyanka`s house and meets Abhishek and John and dances with them on BEEDI, where Kirron Kher enters Priyanka`s house and finds her son in a gay pose with Boman Irani, where Kirron finally accepts John as her son/daughter-in -law (with the song KABHI KHUSHIE KABHI GHAM playing in the background), where John dances with Priyanka on the tune of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (with SRK-Kajol`s rain dance from KKHH is running in the background), where Priyanka is mistaken that John and Abhishek wish to break her relationship with Bobby because they are also in love with Bobby, and finally the climax where Bobby and Priyanka ask Abhishek and John to smooch if they want to prove that they really are Priyanka`s friends.
An interesting analysis in the movie by Abhishek Bachchan was that Gabbar Singh was also gay because he used to ask 'Kitne Aadmi The' (how many MEN were there?) Music by Vishal-Shekhar is decent and goes well with the mood of the movie. I enjoyed 'Maa Da Ladla' the most and it was really hilarious; a song that talks about a guy who has fallen in love with a guy rather than a girl (placed extremely well in the movie and is repeated again at the end of the movie with the 3 main leads of the movie dancing on it).'Desi Girl' is already quite popular (watch out for Abhishek and John`s gay dance during the song...hilarious!) and 'Shut Up and Bounce' which has Shilpa Shetty, looking hot as ever, dancing on it, gives a good start to the movie and it`s good to see Shilpa, FINALLY in a Karan Johar film (even in an item number), since she used to complain that he only gives chance to Kajol, Rani, or Preity in his movies.
As far as the performances are concerned, all perform quite well.Abhishek Bachchan plays his career`s boldest role very confidentally and his gay act is hilarious. It`s quite bold of him to play this sort of a role (the same applies to John Abraham), when most of the mainstream Bollywood actors shy away from playing such characters, fearing about their reputation. John Abraham, who was seen last time in GOAL, last year is back with a bang, with his career`s finest performance. People might have been talking about his physique in this movie but not only that but his performance also deserves a mention. He is natural to the core and pulls of his career`s first comic role quite spontaneously. Priyanka Chopra has developed into a fine actress and this one seems to be another success in her career after Fashion. After giving a string of flops since quite a long time, Priyanka finally has a reason to celebrate with her recent success in Fashion and (hopefully) Dostana, too. Even the flops that she had recently have done her good, in the sense, that she has become more confident and that shows in each and every scene of this movie. Not only that, but even her looks have improved a lot.She looks extremely charming in this movie.
