This movie is about a year and a half old and I have watched it around 5 times. Believe me, it never ceases to amuse me. Normally Bollywood is not one of my favorite topics of discussion, considering this year has been pathetic for the industry, it gets worse. Nevertheless this movie that released in 2001 is not something that anyone would forget in a hurry.
A very practical, genuinely hilarious, truly entertaining movie with a great plot and an awesome star cast who have done one hundred percent justice to the characters in the film.
Director&writter: Farah Akhtar
Producer: Ritesh Sidwani
Music: Shankar, Ehsan and Loy
Cast: Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni And Dimple Kapadia
The first half of the film is total fun. I recall bunking college to catch this movie in the theatre with my friends. I was literally jumping in my seat. It’ll make you laugh and laugh and laugh till your tummy hurts! The second half is very sensible and thought provoking. It is about friendship. It is about understanding the people you think you know. It is about love. You will sympathize with the characters for all that they go through. The end is just amazing. No clichés, no dishum dishum, no noble sacrifices and everything does not miraculously get straightened in the end. I bet, every gal walking out of the theatre would have fallen in love with all the 3 guys.
The plot:
Three guys. Each standing out distinctively from the order. Akash , Siddharth(sid) and Sameer. Akash (aamir) is a fun loving, happy go lucky guy who strongly believes in the nonexistence of ’love’. Sameer(saif) is a flamboyant hunky dude who falls in and out of love in a flip second. Sid(akshaye) is the more composed one. He is a quiet, introvertish guy and a talented painter.
They are out there oblivious of responsibilities, having fun, basking in the luxury they are brought up in. it is a piece of cake for them to parcel up and drive to Goa for a holiday. Amid all the fun, sameer is dangling between hopeless love lust relationships and akash prophesies his school of thought about love and sid is in a world of his own.
Sid comes across Tara Jaiswal (dimple) in his neighourhood as she is moving in and inexplicably falls in love with her. The problem? Tara is a divorced architect, older in age, with a drinking problem. Sameer meanwhile is attracted to a girl pooja (sonali) his parents want him to get married to. The problem?Pooja’s obsessive weird timetable Boyfriend.
Akash is aghast on hearing about sid’s love and makes a slight remark that hurts sid and then on the two of them part ways. Sid leaves to Kasauli for a painting workshop and akash leaves to Australia. Sammer is left trying to mend things but is unsuccessful.
Akash in Australia catches up with shalini(preity) an old acquaintance and finds himself falling in love with her. The problem? She is engaged to Rohit, moreover he does not believe in love remember?!!!
The story is then really about how time brings them back together again.
I admire adore and love the character of akash. Wow what a guy. Plus his idea of a partner is so amazing. Someone who loves you for what you are, the way you are. Someone who does not ask questions or demand answers. Someone who lives his or her life and lets you live yours. Someone who does not ask you change or mend your ways. Even if you are two totally different people, can’t you respect another person the way he or she is even if you don’t agree with everything he or she has to say.
where are these men in the world anyway? or are there at all?
You get to se some adventure sports in Goa, exotic locales in Australia, (even the Oprah featuring the love story of Troilus and Cressida)and a fantastic blast from the past funny dance on stage. The costumes are too trendy and portraying haute couture, brown leather pants and beaded short tight tops. The lifestyle of all the families is fantabulous and anyone would want to covet that lifestyle.
Music:
mind-blowing, scintillating and simply awe-inspiring.
Kudos to shankar, ehsan and loy. All the singers have done a commendable job and the music of this film is one that people will remember for a long long time.
Dil chahta hai and koi kahe: are total party songs overflowing with zest and vigour

Lyrics:
by Javed Akhtar needs a special mention. It is so real and relevant. absolute poetic justice to this great movie. They depict exactly all that the characters have in mind. Every mood is captured so well in each song.
Performance:

Akash:I am sorry sid.mujhe maaf kar de yaar.
Sid: nahin akash. I am sorry.
Akash:nahin sid. Phir kisi aur din maang lena. Aaj meri baari.
Sid:(laughing)tu bilkul nahin badla ha?
Akash: ha waise bhi perfection ko improve karna mushkil hain.
