When I went to the states over christmas I was eager to try Vanilla Coke especially after reading all the lovely reviews about it. We don't yet get Vanilla Coke in the UK. Anyway when we went to try it I was informed that you could get both the regular version and the diet version. I decided to try both.
Both Vanilla Coke and Diet Vanilla Coke have the tast of regular coke with added vanilla. The regular version was nice but I found it very sweet. On the other hand in the diet version having the artificial sweetner cuts the sugary sweetness somewhat and allows more of the vanilla taste to come out and hence makes a more pleasant tasting drink. Because it is less sweet you can drink diet Vanilla coke with most types of food. It comes in the standard cans and bottles and is similarly priced. From what we saw Diet Vanilla Coke was readily available in Supermarkets but not always available in restaurants and fast food outlets. I assume that it contains exactly the same amount of caffeine as regular coke does and hence you do not have to worry about losing your caffeine fix. I find it a little less refreshing than regular coke and hence I can't drink a lot of it at one go. I think this is because of the added vanilla. This can only be a good thing as you shouldn't drink too many soft drinks anyway. I like the drink because as a kid I used to have coke floats (coke + vanilla ice cream) and Diet Vanilla Coke has the same taste as the coke floats used to. Vanilla Ice Cream is quite subtly sweet and the regular Vanilla Coke is just a little too sweet for me. If you personally found Vanilla Coke too sweet I would try the Diet version as you might like it. Alternatively if you are worried about the calories in regular Vanilla Coke then Diet Vanilla coke may be the answer. I personally just like the taste.
