The terrain of commercial Hindi movies is filled with landmines and quick sands. To navigate in such treacherous environment is not easy for any aspiring moviemaker. For eons people have tried to find the perfect formula or mantra to survive in this big bad world of Bollywood.
I have a fleeting suspicion that Aditya Chopra had finally found that Holy Grail. If Sanjay Gadvi is King Arthur then Aditya Chopra is his Merlin who supplies the magic potion to make all the good Knights and demure Dames drunk with it in Dhoom 2.
Essentially D2 celebrates the clean bloodless fun of our favourite childhood game of cops and robbers. Stealing in style and enjoying the chase is the key to enter Dhoom country. Cinematography, Action, Choreography and Music in this movie is executed to perfection by the responsible Individuals. But since Dhoom 2 is all about star power and presence, I will just review those heavenly creatures here.
Hrithik Roshan
As always Hrithik put heart and soul to his craft. He creates and lives the role of Aryan to the last N. The clothes, the walk and the look is done to perfection. He pumps up the volume in the two dance numbers and literally burns the screen with his six pack bare chested ultra cool attitude. All the disguises he uses are entertaining because of the intelligence in the choices and the connection to the scenes. The actions are thrilling and he looks great doing them. The Russian roulette scene with Ash was done neatly without any frills.
Aishwariya Rai
Frankly I loved her in this movie in spite of her strange dialogue delivery. The director end of the day is to be blamed for the same. As reported earlier Ash really worked hard to fit into the perfect ten world of Dhoom 2. The result is that we get a stunning Ash in skimpy clothes prancing all over the screen. The black outfit in the Crazy kiya re number looked amazing as Ash does the Vaibhavi Merchant routine with élan. Ash complimented Hritik scene by scene and the pair looked absolutely picture perfect. She also handled the Russian roulette scene well. Sunehri in her designer outfits is a sight for sore eyes and that is the bare truth.
Abhishek Bachhan
Completes his part efficiently though the script was not very supportive. Did not liked the bearded look, coutsey J P Dutta. The clean shaved with thick rimmed specs in Dhoom 1 was better. The chemistry with Uday was intact as well the dour and surly countenance mouthing dry one liners. His scenes with Hritik went well but the ones with Bipasha seemed forced and artificial.
Bipasha Basu
Lecherous old men like us obviously ogle and drool watching Bipasha in this movie. She enters the story in a sleeveless ganjee and exits while cavorting in a bikini in Rio, Brazil. For the records her cleavage is better than Ash but as a total package she will remain behind Ash in this movie. For the beginners she was lying in a hospital bed wearing a mini skirt with one leg plastered. Thank God for Hindi movies.
Uday Chopra
The joker of the pack. Gets all the claps for his one liners. Loved the scene where he dreams running with Bipasha and kids in the beach wearing Baywatch costumes. He keeps the laughs coming at a regular interval. Her scenes with Rimi were hilarious.
Dhoom 2 is a surefire hit and I loved every bit of it. It is a pefect blend of various movies with hidden reference points. The part in Junagadh in fact reminded me of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The last scene reminds us of After Sunset. MI2 is almost everywhere. You can also find Blame it on Rio hiding behind the wings. Bonnie and Clyde or our desi Bunty and Bubli are obvious influences.
The success of the movie can be gauged when we see the young guns coming out from the cinema halls in their bikes which just seem to roar a bit more than usual as the salwar kameez clad girlfriends cling to them slightly more tightly.
