Bimal Roy and Sanjay Leela Bhansali turned up their own Devdas into big superhits and even into the Oscars. But this one is different, unique and well romanticized. Dev D though not as classic as the two Devdas, its a well-made modern version of Devdas that today's world would like to have. While their are many pluses and minuses, it is a waterfall like entertainer.
Dev (Abhay Deol) is the son of a zamindar . He and Paro (Mahi Gill) are childhood sweethearts. Differences in status and caste prevent their marriage. Dev is sent to Delhi while Paro is married off to a rich but aged widower. In Paharganj(delhi) Devdas meets the pro*titute Chanda (Kalki) but remorse drives him to excesses where Dev and Chanda share some prostitued hours.
The first thing because of which Dev D succeeds is its plot and its well-written script and screenplay. The film though a modern version of Devdas, it is as excellent as Devdas and just the characters and background are changed. Anurag Kashyap finally makes a film which is not a NO SMOKING.
But Dev D is brought into main light by the cast especially, by the hero- Abhay Deol. Abhay Deol plays Dev, which is far better than SRK. His drug scenes and emotional scenes have full fledged acting of a true love in it.
Mahi Gillis natural, consistent and plays the role of Paro well. But she also has to improve her emotions especially in intimate scenes. But she is fantastic and will get many offers by famous directors in romantic films.
Kalkiseems to have played the role of Chanda very well but she has to improve her hindi and words pronouncation. She so far is still very far from bad acting.
Anurag Kashyap is fantastic and delivers a first-class direction. He will now not make unreleased films but will be honoured with this trial of a modern Devdas.Music of Amit Trivedi is fantastic, especially Emotional Attyachaar. Other songs are good to listen. Cinematography also excels while other parts are made beautifully.
