Detective Byomkesh Bakshi: What does a detective story comprise of? And by this I mean a detective story for a mature audience of the age group 21 and above. It obviously needs the obvious like; a detective, a villian and a plot like a murder or kidnapping, but mostly a murder. Apart from these it also has passion, romance, heart-break, deceit, manipulation, smuggling, drugs, revenge and finally justice. A combination of all this is ?YRF? presents ?DibakarBanerjee?'s pot-boiler "Detective Byomkesh Bakshi".
The film is set at the backdrop of Calcutta during World War II in 1942. Bakshi - Byomkesh Bakshi is an ordinary man with extra-ordinary mind. He sees what others fail to see, he understands in-between the lines. He is a person who is not perfect, who fails, who is manipulated, is dumped by the girl he loves, But what sets him apart is his perseverance and resilience for justice and honesty towards his work.
The story is Bakshi Babu being approached by a man to find his father who has disappeared since past 2 months. What follows is an intriguing and a confusing journey culminating into a revelation which is at-once confusing yet very captivating.
As far as the acting is concerned, ?#?SushantSinghRajput? is brilliant. Every actor who has worked in this film, whether he or she is for 5mins or 50mins is brilliant and plays a pivotal role no-matter the length of the role.
Coming to the direction and cinematography, Dibankar Banerjee has nailed it. How Calcutta was in 1942 during the World War II; the look, the attire, alleys, the famous china town; everything is taken into consideration.
What I liked about the film: What I liked about the film is the honesty with which it is made, the simplicity of its presentation and the intertwining and the relevance of each and every character. There is not a moment where you feel that the film could have done without this character or that.
The film has comic moments, song and music in the background not to forget love, hatred, deceit and murder.
What I liked about the Main Character: That he is not God. Meaning he is not perfect. He fails a couple of times, is exploited for his intelligence, is beaten but he learns from his mistakes and manages to unravel the mystery to arrive at the truth.
All in all it is a gripping film that captivates your attention. You can say that its India's answer to Sherlock Holmes. I would higly recommend this film if you are interested in intriguing and little confusing plots which has suspense and thrill and light moments but not the quintessential song and dance and sex in it.
In my review-meter I would give it 4star.
