When it comes to D e s m o n d H a y n e s, size does matter. Probably one of the finest opening batsman ever to have lived on out planet. What a formidable team it was when he was there in the picture.
He had an enviable average of over 40. Thanks to his 17 centuries off only 238 one dayers, he had the record of the highest number of centuries. This record was unbeaten for more than 10 years. Sachin now holds this record. Nothing was scarier than his build. A bouncer would hardly come to his chest level. Being an opening batsman, there were hardly any bowlers who were able to suppress him.
During his years, West Indies had the most formidable opening pair, feared by most of the bowlers. He was the first to get to 7000 and 8000 runs. He was the second player to play 200 or more one-day international matches. Haynes made his international debut against Australia at St John’s, Antigua, on February 22, 1978.
