In his early days Ram Gopal Varma created such an impact with his films that he became a brand name and people use to wait for his films. As he grew in the industry, he opted to make films that pleased him without bothering too much about the movies' fate at the box office, which brought him a lot of criticism as some of the films made by him were much below par of his own standards.

He has continued to make films and is back with another one called Department, which has been in news since it was launched. RGV has made films that falls in all the categories starting from bad, average, good, very good and excellent and Department falls in the category of good films, had a little extra attention was paid to the script, it would have certainly raised the standards of the film.

This time RGV has chosen the police department, which has good cops and bad cops, where honest cops cannot work with honesty because of certain lines drawn which they are not suppose to cross. Inspector Shiv (Daggubati Rana) is suspended because he shot a criminal on the road.

Top officials of police and politics decide to start a parallel department which will not be following the lines of the police and will have the authorities to deal with the crime world in their own fashion. Inspector Mahadev Bhonsle (Sanjay Dutt) is made incharge of the Department and is asked to choose his men. He chooses Inspector Shiv along with few other men.

There are two gangs operating in the area. Southia gang (Vijay Raaj) and other gang by Mohammed Ghouri. These two gangs become the target of Department but during every encounter only men from Southia gang are killed where as the members of Ghouri gang are never to be seen. This Department feels that since Ghouri gang is more organised then Southia, it will take some time before they nab them as well.

Enters Sarjerao Gaikwad (Amitabh Bachchan), a gangster turned politician, does favor to Shiv by giving him an apartment from government quota and then calls him for a meeting with Mahadev where he reveals the secret of Ghouri by pointing fingers at Mahadev. With this begins the game of suspicion, tussle between good cop and bad cop with the controls in the hands of the mastermind which leads to an action packed stunning climax.

The intentions of RGV were right but he did not pay much attention to the script part of it because such films require a water tight script that will keep the viewers on the edge, which was missing to some extent. No doubt there are enough scenes to surprise the viewers but unfortunately they are not backed up well by tight writing.

The film starts with a quote reading as "Power Corrupts. Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely" and politics, police and underworld all runs with power. This was a golden opportunity for RGV to deliver another masterpiece because seldom we see a product in the Bollywood where politics & police department are so much focused with underworld at the background.

The film has many RGV trademark shots, which though have become predictable but when backed with good background score and nice execution, they still leave an impact and Department has enough such scenes.

The looks of the criminals are straight from the RGV factory that is good. The film is very violent and rightly so because as the premise is such that it required high voltage action scenes and for action lovers it will be paisa wasool moments. The ricocheting sounds of bullets, the chase scenes, the fight sequences are superbly filmed.

Looks like RGV too felt the need for the item number and has forced a song, which was not required. Nathalia Kaur who did the item number has no inhibitions to reveal but will have to work on her dancing abilities because her body is not so flexible to the fast beats and this can spoil the charm that her beautiful body will exhibit. The song 'Kammo' is watchable and few words of appreciation for Mr. Bachchan were spoken by the group sitting in the row ahead of me. No doubt he enjoyed doing this song.

Dialogues are cleverly written keeping the characters in mind. For example dialogues for Abhimanyu SIngh, Manjli Singh, Vijay Raaj have the language such people often uses.

Photography varies from very good to average because I did not like the usage of 5D camera as it moves very frequently and kills the impact that the scene actually would have created.

Vijay Raaj is Southia is good. Manjli Singh make a good debut and so is Abhimanyu Singh. Manchu Laxmi as Sanjay Dutt's wife in a small role does well. Anjana Sukhani looks beautiful and did a good job as Rana Daggubatti's wife.

Sanjay Dutt has to be bit careful about his weight, which is increasing. His performance is just ok as he has done this many times before and there was nothing new for him to do.

Rana Daggubatti has a towering personality and everything else that is required to be a successful actor. He does well and announces that he is here to stay.

Mr. Amitabh Bachchan doesn't has a big role but has a significant role and he still holds the magic that made him so very popular. He is once again flawless.

Production values are good and RGV has kept the budget under control. RGV has given his best to narrate the story with good speed and he succeeds as well.

It is very unfortunate that majority of people prefer to remember RGV for films like Agyaat, Daud and other duds that he has made and forgets gems like Sarkar, Satya, Company, Rakhcharitra, etc. People who love thrillers, action and political films, for them Department will work.

My rating: 3.5 / 5 stars.
