Thanks to the Common Wealth Game 2010 (CWG). Being Delhi the host, crores of rupees has been used to developing the infrastructure of Delhi . I pray India win Olympic hosting bid and all the major events of the world. This way at least few cities infrastructure should be develop to meet expectation of Tourist. I hope Tourist carries good memories apart from cheap clothes and things from India.Daily on an average about 10 lakh people travel in Delhi Metro . It has/will become life line of Delhi. Before this public mode of transport, It was time when you have to bargain with auto for fares. Or travel in killer Blue line or Less frequent DTC . Now a days, DTC has increase its fleet. We can all see Marcopolo (Tata) and Ashok Leyland buses running in road.
Few times, I got chance to travel from Noida to New Delhi railways station. First time I bought the prepaid card since, it saves approx 10% in each travel. I was surprised buy the security and cleanliness . The platform security are maintain by CISF and private security personal. CISF personal which has taken the herculean task of securing metro. People come in queue to entrance, at the entrance you have to place you pre-paid card or token. If don’t have pre-paid card, you can buy the token.Token are plastic coin with metal inside. The token is issued from starting station to end station. The fares are charge accordingly. I would advice to have a card, as it is valid for years and saves money.
A card saves time as it avoid queue for tokens. No issue to keep change . I liked the cleanliness, it just opposite to our railways. It has escalator which helps you in climbing/going down . You have the display system which tells you by what time the train would be reaching the status. One the trains arrives, you get in and enjoy the cool AC during summer . I see few food outlets but it is banned inside the compartment. You have good announcement system which tells to about the next arriving station. It has maps inside of the route you are travelling. It also tells you about the next change. The crowd are good compare with DTC , etc. Its very rarely delayed , if it is due to serious problems.
Our South delhi is not connected via Metro now, hopefully it will be connected before CWG. The operational lines are as below as of date.
Line 1 (Dilshad Garden - Rithala)
Line 2 (Jahangirpuri - Central Sectt.)
Line 3 (Noida City Centre – Dwarka Sector 9)
Line 4 (Anand Vihar – Yamuna Bank)
Hopefully, with Phase II and III. More places would be covered in NCR. It would be a gift to Noida, Delhi and Gurgaon. Even Airports will be connected .
For buying the Travel Card , you just need 100/- in which you get 50 rupees travel amount and rest as refundable security deposit. Then you can re-charge it each time. Its valid from one year of recharge. Another option is Tourist Card which you get unlimited rides for one (70/-) or three days (200/-) .
Feeder Buses are also available at some place, from Yamuna Station I got it for ring road.
Overall, I enjoyed the ride. It reminded me of my travel in BART of San Francisco, California, USA
