Yet another Golden Feather on Amitabh's crown. With Deewar, this tall, dark man from Allahabad consolidated his position in the film industry and came to be called the 'angry young man' of Indian Film Industry, the tag which still is, his very own..
Deewar was released in same year as Sholay, and it went on to win all the major Film Fare award for that year, a unique achievement considering the status of Sholay.
Deewar had a mother ( Nirupa Roy ) but the mother of this film was no run-of-the-mill moms Hindi films generally show. The mother was the integral part of the story right from the first frame to the end of the film.
This widowed mother has two sons. One is a police officer, and the other a smuggler. The smuggler son is an intense man and has not forgiven the people who humiliated them during childhood. He grows up to be a rebel of sort and avenges the humiliation his family has to suffer when he was child.
He also wants to make up for the sufferings and losses his mother went through to bring him and his brother up and is in a hurry to buy her all the happiness of the world. Smuggling gives him quick money. But his mother doesn't know of her son's profession. It is only when her younger son discovers his brother's involvement’s does the mother come to know.
Deewar is a story of the good versus the bad. Shashi Kapoor is the good police officer and Amitabh Bachchan the bad smuggler. But Amitabh's dramatic death on his mother's lap, in the end of the film won the audience. The death scene went on to become landmark in film industry with everyone from Aamir to Sharukh copying it at some point of their career. The message was clear. He was not bad, circumstances made him bad.
The story and dialogues written by Salim-Javed is one of the best script till date. The direction by Yash Chopra was great with every thing looking to be so real and important for the script, be it the costumes or the dialogues or for that matter the location, everything from DIL SE from each individual related to the film.
The Dialogues of the film was the highlight of the film.
Nirupa Roy became the quintessential mother with Deewar
Amitabh gave the perfomance of his life which no one could match till now, and rest of the casts were also good.
