Well.well.well. For everyone who do not know the history of DATSUN, well it is a 86 year old company & one of the sought after Japanese car maker where it has a fair share of its fame until 1986. Like every other car maker of that era who unable to upgrade or change its car design principles this brand slowly sunk into no man's land silently.
On 2013 Nissan re-launched DATSUN brand under its sub-brand, which offcourse categorized as a people's car with low cost maintenance and high mileage.
I was very excited & looking up to that.
First look at the brand I thought it will be like owning a piece of history and the reliability of the car which again has some serious stories to tell back then. Well, after getting my first test drive, there is nothing much say, I felt it is just a regular low cost car with no frills and bits nor quality. I was really disappointed with the way they have put this car in the market, offcourse it is a low cost car and nothing more to expect but on comparison with the market leader which is hands down is Maruthi's ALTO, things get really very pragmatic.
The Brand history will only get much needed hype till user gets his first drive and I don't think people will opt-in or buy it only for the sake history, isn't it?.
Sure shot, the exterior design is very elegant and pretty much like a compact SUV but as I said that the body construction is very much fragile and I don't think it will survive our Indian road conditions, it will have that wobble effect after a couple of years, for sure.
Coming down to the interior, well here again nothing much to go gaga over it, very basic laid out dashboard with minimal features and it is evident that this car is a father of cost cutting.
I do like the fact that the Engine share's same DNA with the current heartthrob the Renault KWID, which is very good. But will people have a second thought buying this? That's something time will definitely tell in terms of over all market selling.
On the personal note I will surely consider paying attention to other brands as well and increase my budget if needed.
Better buying a good product than end up in service stations regularly.
Sure, I agree that most of our Indian people look after the mileage first, but reliability is also very much important when we look at owning the car for about 4 year atleast, after all its hard earned money and people will not ooze out cash on service stations every now and then, DATSUN are you listening?
