I know, its a bit too late a review on this product! Been almost 4 years that I had bought the Compaq V2623TS Notebook. However, the reason why I am writing this review is because of the new life infused into my notebook by "Linux Mint."
Till now, I was using Windows XP SP2 on my notebook, not that there is anything exceptional the notebook could have done with it. I also had only 256mb of RAM on it, so you could imagine my plight!
Any new games I want to install.. phew! Forget it. Any new S/W, chews RAM.. but still chugs along! Till I upgraded my RAM to 512mb, coz 1GB would not be compatible!! Sad!
Then came Linux Mint, instantly, the notebook was a performance notebook! I tried my hand at GIMP Image editing tool, worked flawless on it. No need to install any drivers, the Mint DVD, did it all for me. Things I was worried about were, Wireless Lan, which were installed in a giffy! NIC installed correctly, it also added a driver for bluetooth! Well.. this notebook doesn't have one! :)
Even for torrent download, battery back up, the Notebook works perfectly fine. I guess I may not part off with it.. its still a good work horse for me!
Since this notebook is now obsolete, in the second hand market, I would recommend this notebook, even if you do not have active knowledge in Linux, the Linux Mint DVD, helps you out quite a bit.. makes sense to buy one, if you are on the go and need a small and cheap notebook.
Cheers Compaq and HP!
