My close friend is getting married and we were just discussing the marriage which got me into a very sentimental mood. So before I get rid of it, I thought I’d write on this topic which most people seem to be writing these days. I see mostly guys have written on this.I know what I would like to receive so I think am qualified to write on this topic. Now that I have got that straight let me go ahead.
Gifts should be thoughtful and personal and not just something picked off the rack randomly from a gift shop. I hate soft toys but many girls seem to like it, what works for one will not work for all.
Listen to her.
Remember the movie You’ve got mail, Meg Ryan is down with a bad cold, Tom Hanks pays her a visit with a bunch of daisies, she loves them and doesn’t recollect mentioning it. She is touched, even though she hates him. It means a lot because it shows you are attentive and you care.
The mood is wearing off…
I am sorry about the title. There is nothing original in my review. Years of watching movies have taught me one or two things about love. So all ideas are borrowed or influenced by them except maybe the last one. There is a common thread though, in all the 5 gifts mentioned. They all cost little or nothing. The idea is not to save money but to do something, different something special.
1) Collection of songs
This is a very old idea and it works. All you have to do is buy a CD, download songs, burn it. Easy? Not so much. First of all you have to painstakingly choose songs she likes. If you don’t know what she likes then choose songs you would like to sing for her. A Cd can easily store about 100 MP3s(Or around that much) and it could be quiet a task choosing those many, here is when MS comes to the rescue. Read reviews about “songs I would sing for my beloved”. That will give you some idea.
NOTE
Be Careful. One wrong song and you could easily ruin the relation ship, Imagine shes listening to a nice romantic number, thinking of you and suddenly Ozzy Osbornes “Mama I love You “ starts playing!
Also make sure you know what the lyrics mean in all the songs.
2) Write a song
I love this idea. Every girl likes to feel special and a song written specially for her, there is nothing like it. You don’t have to be a poet, anything will do and if its funny its even better. Don’t write something that will apply to all girls in general but something specific to her.
Something like
“I saw you first at Rex Theater
And my heart started to beat faster.”
Ok I am not good at this but you get the idea.
NOTE
If you are going to write a 4 line poem something that goes “Roses are Red, Violets are…” and call it a birthday gift I am pretty sure that will be last you will see of her. If you cant come up with more than 4 lines I suggest you couple it with a Perfume or something like that.
3) Collage/Scrap book.
This sounds more like a gift for 12 year olds but you don’t have to use gluestick and colour paper. Just collect stuff that could mean something to her. Like a photo of your first trip together, tickets of your first movie together anything that will bring back good memories and gift wrap it.
NOTE
Make sure the tickets are of the movie you saw together, not a movie you saw with your ex.
4) Cook her a meal.
Try something exotic that way if anything goes wrong you can always say that is how it is supposed to be.
Don’t just call and fix a date, send her an invitation to a gourmet meal promising her an experience of a lifetime or something like that(I think I saw this in American Desi). Girls love it when you go through all the trouble just for her.
NOTE
Find out before hand about her food allergies.
5) Long distance Love
This is just a special case. Say your friend is some place else other than home(say Bangalore) and is missing home. You go to visit her.
Collect anything that would remind her of home. A copy of the local newspaper(Bangalore Times may be), Tape her favorite show on the local radio station(Preferably the one that talks about the city), A printout of the weather forecast, food available only here(MTR or niligiris chocolates) put them all in a box and write something like “ So what if you cant be in Bangalore, I bought Bangalore to you” or something less corny.
NOTE
Don’t copy exactly this, COME UP WITH SOMETHING ORIGINAL, WILL YOU?
That, I think applies to most girls but if you want to win me over how about an buying me an ipod or a digital camera?
