Selecting the right Computer Institute. Consider the following 10 points before selecting a computer institute.

1. Who are they? Means what are the credentials of the institute. Does it make you a ’’programmer’’ or ’’an operator’’ or ’’an end user’’. If you want to become a programmer then join an institute that makes you that. Don't go for fancy names in the ads. Big definitely does not mean the best. Find what is the refund system. Many of the computer institutes are one way traffic, the traffic (cash) always flows to them. When even Fridge and PC have a refund policy on non satisfaction with no questions asked, computer institutes don't have any such. Take it in writing on the refund system. Refund should be fast and not long and frustrating. Ask them on what all can be done if you are dissatisfied?

   
   




2. What are you. Do you have the aptitude of becoming a computer programmer. People say that maths/science is not needed. But dont buy this. It is to say that anyone without a medicine background can also become a doctor. But then will you take medicine from such a doctor. I am sure you would not even like to get treated with somebody who is still doing medicine. The same is with companies. Companies prefer to take programmers who have a math/science background. Also this does not mean that those without math/science will never become programmers. What I want to say is that during job applications the preference would be more for them. So you need to put the additional effort always.

   
   




3. Try any institute but then a MCA like qualification always helps. The other institutes can tell that ’’theory’’ is not important etc etc but then dont buy the idea. Theory is always important. Whether it is engineering, medicine, lawyer, accountancy or management or for that matter physical education or even acting. Theory is always important.

   
   




4. Ask about the lecturers who will be teaching you. Dont hesitate in asking the qualification of the lecturers. If a Xth standard boy starts to teach a class of IXth is it ok. Or if you are being treated by a student of medicine in the 3rd or 4th year, will you go for it? In corporate trainings we always ask for the bio data of the trainer. We dont fall for the big names provided by the training provider. Because at the end of the day it is the trainer who would play the vital role.

   
   




5. Find about things like, duration of the program. Will they compensate if their program does not finish in time. If the institute needs time management for itself then what time management will it teach to the students. What is the level of IT awareness in the institute. An institute that does not have a decent web site, and teaches of multimedia does not make sense. An institute that is still collecting fees manually and giving bills written by hands, is not a proper place to learn programming.

   
   




6. Crowded institutes are not the best. As more and more people go to the institute the lesser is the time the lecturers or the trainers can spend on you. If you are planning to take computers as your career then at least 15 to 18 hours of lecturing per week is needed. Any thing less is of no use. It is just like you are preparing to be a marathon runner and your coach makes you run 15 kms a week and claims that anyway in a month you are running 60km. Beware. What you learn fast you forget fast.

   
   




7. Small towns offer better education than the cities. This is the real situation but people understand other wise. In cities the lecturers or the trainers change very fast. For small increments they dont mind switching jobs. Since they stay far away from their homes and take quite some time travelling to reach their office, they are always ’’Watch looking’’. Also due to the high cost of living in the cities, high rates for the property etc, the institutes have to get a large number of students to break even. 8. Take advice before joining. Many students go to training institutes and on listening to ’’career advice’’ from a few pretty girls, (who them selves are looking for better career chances) just rush and register for the program.
