Globalization has always taken people away from indigenous stuff. It is the comfort and ease and yes may be a little style and a fashion statement for all of us. Flaunting foreign cars, clothing, accessories, designer homes and not forgetting our dining habits have quite been our forte. That is quite apparent in the fact that pizza corner launched its first outlet in Chennai, the actual idly dosa country. Another such outlet spreading around is the fried chicken specialty restaurants called ‘chicking’ Bangalore’s Kentucky fried chicken(KFC) counter part in Chennai is chicking. (I am sorry chennaites, I happen to be a banglorean and always compare everything to something in b’lore) Chicking opened around 6-8 months back in Chennai. It has three outlets currently.
Outlets
1.besantnagar-right close to the beach. Very congenial for an outing in the beach
2.nungambakam
3.adyar
The menu
As the name suggests, they are a fried chicken specialty but also offer a range of vegetarian stuff. They have a range of burgers, fries, wraps, nuggets, fried fingers, one rice item- fried rice and so on. Although chicken is their specialty they offer all the above with fish, prawns and tuna. Vegetarian side here includes potato wedges, onion rings, veg nuggets and hot strips. They also have a couple of salads, buns, fruit salad, ice creams and the usual beverages. There is then the plethora of combos where all the individual items are mixed and matched for a reasonable deal.
The service:
prompt and pleasing is all I would say. All these places have young lads with yellow t-shirts and red hats over courteous and very eager to please. They can get you anything you want however some stuff on the menu could take longer than the others. Chicking offers free express door delivery.
The prices
Pretty reasonable for all the food you eat. The wraps and beverages however are overrated. As always, beverages at these place are high priced. I cannot fathom how they serve 500ml coke at Rs25 and unlimited coke at Rs30 Ambience neat and very bright. Very yellow actually. Light and sporty are the words. Light comfy furniture, air conditioned, with the usual television and music being played with no co-relation.
Reviewer's word
I visit Chennai only once in 4-5 months. I have never noticed more than 2,3 people in these restaurants. I can’t really say if it is a big hit in Chennai(chennaiites must fill me in) Personally I liked the place and think it is a nice place to go with friends, not with family. It may fit in for a date or catching up with a friend but this place is far from romantic.(unless you are seeing someone for a long time and have the capability of making any place romantic!!!) ideally a friends, cousins, thing.
BTW they serve only halal chicken and do not serve beef or pork.
