There are many Indoor games. Some are ancient, like Chess & Draughts & some are modern inventions like Bowling, Hand Ball, Gymnastics & Bridges. Some are games of pure chance, like some card-games & some are games of skill, like Chess. All such games are meant for amusement to pass away the “extra time” but some of them while giving amusement gives something more. I personally do not like card-games for I think that any game that depends solely on chances, very soon loses its interest & charm. Of course, there is a good deal of skill & shrewd guessing required in some card-games like bridge but after all, luck has a great deal to do with the outcome of a match (Mostly people play card-games as it involves money….Only gambling can keep up an interest in cards)…However, my favorite Indoor game is Chess as it practically does not involves any destiny to favor its players.
I was initiated into the game of Chess by my father when I was just 8yrs old. My father is a very good player of Chess & would play it on Sundays & other public holiday in the afternoon with his friends & sometimes with me. It was really fascinating to see them play for hours together. Their playing session sometimes would extend into late evenings. Though, I admit that I learned many finer points & strategies of the game by watching them play.
Chess is a very intellectual game & recreation & also an art that creates beauty & lasting pleasure. There is no other Indoor game or human activity that reflects so many ranges of encounters & real life situation as does Chess. Lets imagine this world is a mere chess-board, the people the Chessmen & God, the creator, the player. Do we not begin our life like Chessman equal in to closet, place the board of life to play our difficult roles as Pawns, Knights, Bishop, Queens & Kings? Do we not become equal again in the eyes of our Creator as he returns us to the same clandestine at the end of the play?
So is there any other game, hobby or diversion as philosophical, intellectual & thoughtful as Chess? No, not at all. It is an ageless game & it’s hold human imaginations & mind to such great extend that sometimes real battles were won & lost while the players remained absorbed in their mock battle of pieces & pawns.
The captive power of Chess is really wonderful. It helps in developing decision-making, skills & abilities. A Chess-player’s strength lies in clear rational thinking, right approach, logic, knowledge & ability not to commit a mistake. His power of vision, vigilance, intuition & imagination are what makes him stronger than others. A game of Chess means leisure time spend creatively & purposefully. It is a good training for those engaged in challenging tasks & intellectual pursuits. A player of Chess is required to make a decisive move in a very complex situation & that too under time pressure & that is exactly what is required from people in many challenging professions.
Chess players have been found to possess a higher decision making ability than others of comparable intelligence levels. They also possess greater physical endurance together with tolerance of frustration. A game of Chess is a manifestation of both the will to win & create beauty by aiming to surmount all complexity, rigors & barriers to realize his plans & ideas. It appeals me most because it involves at every move, at every stage intensiveness, enterprise, resourcefulness, self-control, determination, vision & the quick execution of the plan.
Even though, Chess is not an easy game, but any idea that you have to be highly intellectual or clever to play it should be dismissed. If the game were easy to master, it would be trivial & would attract little interest. On the contrary, if Chess was hard to learn it would not be played at all. The magic of Chess is that it can be learnt by almost anyone, played almost anywhere & at almost any level with equal enjoyment.
Chess is a game purely of Indian origin; a great tribute to Indian inventive genius.
