Hospital. Doctors . Diseases. Scary words! Aren't they?
If given a choice many of us would never ever think of going to a hospital. However, there are a few who might go to one out of choice. I did that. I chose to get my eye surgery done. I was tired and annoyed of using glasses/lenses for the last 12 years and taking this decision was entirely based on my will and desire to have a “normal” vision.
When I first heard of LASIK it was hard for me to believe it is safe. Later when a few of my friends got it done I gathered courage to venture into the activity of gathering more information. I came across an advertisement of Center For Sight which was offering LASIK at a reasonable price. I gathered information about the doctors and came to know they all are associated with LV Prasad Eye hospital which is a renowned eye hospital in Hyderabad.
My review is based on my experience of being both a patient and assisting a patient who underwent Retina Detachment Surgery.
Initial Experience: –
Location:-
I went to the hospital which is located at Banjara Hills, Hyderabad to gather information about LASIK. It is well situation on the main road and has decent parking facility right in front of the hospital.
Staff: –
Before interacting with the doctors, I called the staff to find the location and other details. The staff, their attitude reminded me of services aboard. It was quite impressive.
Doctors: –
Friendly and calm, these two adjectives describe their attitude the best. Since my first interaction the positivity they instilled in me gave me the courage to face the operation theater.
The Process: –
LASIK treatment isn’t meant for everyone; this is one thing I came to know when I was asked to undergo eye test. I was asked if I use lenses often and after testing they weren’t quite sure of the result as it is difficult to assess it well if one wears lenses on regular basis. Because of this I took the test again after a week, all through which I managed with the glasses. The result confirmed that I can go for the operation.
Right after, I was counseled by a specialist with instructions like not applying perfume, not washing hair for a week after the surgery. I was asked to come the next day for the surgery.
The Surgery: –
Finally the day came when I was all ready for the challenge ahead. I was scared initially with the fear that if the surgery fails I won’t be able to see anything at all! But then the advancement in technology was a great comfort.
I went to the hospital before time, I was asked to sign a declaration which said I am going for this surgery as per my will and other scary things which I ignored. Within no time I was called to a room which was connected to the operation theater. Soon the doctor’s assistant gave me drops and I sat there lost in thoughts. Before I could think anything, a girl came out of the operation theater. Her eyes were covered with green caps and I was wondering if she underwent LASIK. When she started talking to her mother, I realized it was LASIK. I asked her how she feels. Her answer comforted me. She said, “It was all like a game.”
I strongly felt, it is all going to be simple and easy. With a positive attitude I waited for my turn. Soon I saw Dr. Ashish Bansal who greeted me with a warm smile. He asked me if I was ready, I confirmed. I was then asked to wear a light blue coat and called into the operation theater.
The process started, an injection is what I remember. Local anesthesia is what they call it. And then, with one eye covered, the other eye saw shades of different colors, there was water, there were instruments moving but I couldn’t make/feel much of it. My eye was all fixed, focused, I couldn’t feel a thing.
Indeed technological advancement! Soon the process repeated for the other eye…
It was all done in 30 minutes. Both my eyes very covered with green caps. I immediately asked if I can open my eyes. The answer was yes. I tried but I didn’t want to as my eyes were strained and heavy. I was informed by the doctor that my eyes will water constantly for the coming two days and how I need to take drops every 2 hours. I was also asked to cover my eyes with caps while sleeping and wear glasses when I go out for the next 10 days.
The next day’s appointment was fixed. I was asked to read the letters displayed on the LCD scree. The difference was visible but it wasn’t flawless. I was told by the doctor that the vision will get better with time. Watering eyes were indeed a trouble but after five days, my life changed. The vision got better and in another ten days I felt like a different person.
It was a successful operation! Thanks to the almighty and the wonderful doctors who constantly kept monitoring my progress, I felt comfortable from the very beginning.
Moving on to the next experience. My colleague complained that her right eye feels rather strained and isn't able to see clearly. In the busy schedule that I am in, I told her it might be due to lack of sleep as she was busy off late. Soon she underwent an eye test and informed me about she undergoing an operation for Retinal Detachment. I was also told that this is something that can happen to anyone, anytime and 1 in 10, 000 suffer from it.
After having experienced a good treatment, I suggested her to visit Center for Sight before opting for the other hospital. She agreed and both of us went to consult the doctor. The doctor initially tested and confirmed the same. The medical counselor informed us about the packages. We were told how the prices vary with the kind of medicine used. The international medicine may cost around 15, 000 more and so on.
We weren't too sure and we thought we need to talk to the doctor. The doctor, Ajit Babu was honest and straight forward in telling us that we can go for the package that suits our economic needs. He added that it is the doctor who matters and the result ultimately will be the same. His comforting words helped us take the decision, She opted for the lowest medical package and the result was more than just satisfactory.
If you anytime decide or feel the need to undergo a surgery. I would like you to visit Center for Sight. It has many branches all over India and you can be assured of the best service.
I hope and pray that all of us visit doctors only out of choice!
