I'm one of those people who believe that the quality of a film is determined right from the very first title and the very first indication of sound that starts the film. It is a pity that many people do not give enough importance to the impact of a good title sequence and so I was delighted to see the fresh vitality of the titles to Catch me if you Can.
Perhaps the kind of storytelling of the film can be vaguely recognised in several other films as it is not entirely unique, nor is it expected to be, but the title sequence was new and exciting and not to be missed.
I must add that it came as quite a surprise that such a character driven film was directed by Spielberg, man of dismembered beings whether it be by shark, dinosaurs, wars or Hitler. Sensitively handled, the film demonstrates that Spielberg is a man who can not only handle highly technological films, but hold his weight with normal character based films that don't need big action sequences to maintain the audience's interest.
It turns out, that Spielberg's able direction is not the only surprise..we witness very believable performances from both Leonardo Dicaprio, whom I am happy to see is not being gooey and chocolaty whilst jumping around, arms flailing, on a sinking ship and on that matter of chocolate; Tom Hanks who... well...is not spouting on and on about chocolate boxes. It is indeed a pleasant change to not have to see Tom Hanks being too unintelligent, too smart or too starved and take the role of an unexceptional man and breathe warmth into the character.and as for young Leo, well..i suppose it really does require some impressive acting skills to always have the audience rooting for you even when your deeds are questionable.
And so, yes, the film is not overly exceptional but very enjoyable all the same; great titles, a story that will never leave you bored despite its length and even a glimpse of the real Frank Abagnale Jr in a small role.
And ofcourse it makes you want to take out your check book and screw SBI so badly....but that ofcourse is another story and another review!
Do go watch and then do go happily and commit fraud!
