What seemed next to impossible few years back, when turns out to be perfect at one go, one feels it to be miracle. Yes, I am talking about lasik eye surgery(for the number reduction).
Here the writer got heavy numbers of myopia at the first detection that is at the tender age of 8years. They were L.-2.50, R-2.45; as the age grew, thickness of glasses also went on increasing. To say numbers kept on increasing. Lately(that is before surgery) numbers were L-6, R-5.45!In between I used to wear specs. To hide the thickness of glass, special glass(though expensive); came to my aid of not looking like biselari sodas bottom glasses as we say locally.
Craze of teenage, youth pertaining good looks forced me to go for contact lens. I wore it for 10 long years but they were irritating. Problems caused due to prolong use when exceeded beyond my bearing capacity I again came back to conventional mode of wearing specs!
When I heard of lasik surgery for vision correction dream grew deep inside me of having my vision normal without using any aid i.e. specs, lens.
Initially the possibility in itself of getting my number diminished made me feel on the top of world. In fact I had misconception of non-possibility with two conditions-my number increased throughout my life that is it never stabled and cylindrical number being very high!During my initial consultation, Dr talked with me, obtained measurements of my eyes, and determined which procedure is the best for my specific situation. Lasik was their procedure of choice. The vision recovery with Lasik is rapid.
Surgery can be done in three ways- Laser Vision Correction-LASIK, INTRALASIK and LASIK without a flap
==To correct nearsightedness, the curvature of the cornea is decreased the cornea is made flatten.
==To correct farsightedness, the curvature of the central cornea is increased. Only a very small amount of tissue is removed, usually less than the thickness of a hair. Low amounts of nearsightedness or farsightedness will require smaller amounts of tissue removal, and larger corrections will require greater amounts.
=Lasik requires an additional surgical step, which is the creation of the flap. The flap is created with an instrument known as a keratome, which cuts and then folds back a thin layer of the front of the cornea. Creation of the flap takes about 15 seconds and is virtually painless. When the flap is made with the laser(IntraLasik), it takes about two minutes.
Result
The vast majority of patients no longer need glasses or contact lenses for distance vision after laser vision correction treatment. Almost all patients who have laser vision correction see better without glasses after the procedure.
The quality of vision after laser vision correction is usually superior to vision with contact lenses or glasses.
Complications
Laser vision correction though subject to complications, rate is very low. Complications are rare, but will be more common in patients with high amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Most complications can be partially or totally corrected through a repeat laser procedure.
By far the most common complication of laser vision correction is under-correction or over-correction. Under-corrections and over-corrections are the main reason that all patients do not have perfect uncorrected vision after the initial excimer laser treatment. Patients who experience under-correction or over-correction can usually undergo a second procedure to obtain a better correction.
About 2% of excimer laser patients will experience optical aberrations, including glare, halos at night, or ghost images. This occurs if light is entering from around the edge of the treatment area. Some people have pupils that dilate more than the treatment area. Use of the Alcon LADARVision laser, with its eye tracker and substantially larger treatment areas, has dramatically improved this problem.
Eye sight being very important and precious in life everybody undergoing for surgery always fears loosing eyesight! This amount of knowledge imparted by Dr almost clarified my myths about the surgery. Also Dr ruled out my doubts regarding non-possibilities of surgery with high numbers and green signaled me, I hurricaned for appointment as soon as found myself suitable.
These results are very impressive, but it is impossible to tell you exactly what your results will be. No guarantees can be made about the outcome of excimer laser surgery in any individual case, because each person responds in a slightly different way. So up till the date of surgery, I was praying God every now and than for the fear and anticipation putting the possibility of vision not getting totally corrected?
Having worn glasses since long, I really had no idea what to expect from this procedure. The surgery itself was scary. The anxiety I felt was. No two ways about it. I found it nearly impossible to control my fight or flight instincts during the procedure and just relax.
And as bad as it was, it really wasn't that bad. with little discomfort of being eye clipped and not able to blink during surgery; I coped everything with thudding heart. You feel mild discomfort also when the flap in your eye is cut open. Then, the laser runs for a few minutes and you're done.
During the whole process I was aware, made aware by Dr?s constant detailed instruction even to the extent of cornea flapped being cut and sealed. after a few minutes it was all over. Now, after having gone through it, all my fears of Lasik was put to rest. This was very exciting, thrilling experience! What are a few minutes of discomfort for a lifetime of crutch-free vision?
The total treatment usually takes less than one minute of actual laser time. The computer with special software directs the actual operation of the laser system. The surgery and thereafter the whole process are painless. As most of the pain fibers in the cornea are in the surface portion. Because this portion of the cornea is disturbed in PRK/Lasek but not in Lasik(it is part of the flap, which is folded back into place after the laser energy is applied), there is much less discomfort after Lasik. The whole surgery is painless.
Walking out of operation theatre with hazy vision gave me little jitters? You can't see much immediately after the surgery. Everything was little blurry. I was made to wear Protective goggles that fog up and keep moisture inside. with medication and drops thereafter I slept deeply.
In evening?I had very blurry vision. I would lift the goggle and wipe away fog periodically to test my new vision. I noticed improvement throughout the day but nothing compared to that next morning.
Opening the eyes next morning was altogether unforgettable experience of my life! Opening eyes with vision made me feel on the top of world. Something that seemed impossible, all of sudden it was back to normalcy. I loved my new vision! but true; the day after the procedure was the best day of my life! I woke up and felt this amazing sense of freedom.
