Travel Right!

Does car travel with children have to be stressful and complete agony? With careful planning it doesn't need be!

We often make day and weekend trips and for the most part our children behave well. Oh yes, we do occasionally have those sudden outbursts but we quickly nip those in the bud before they become major disruptions.

Before a trip, we carefully choose materials that will keep our children entertained and occupied. We invested in travel games which require little space yet make long trips bearable. Some of our favorites include Scrabble, Checkers and for the older children Chess. We also are strong believers in reading and have instilled this in our children. So often before a trip we go to our local bookstore and allow our kids to pick out a book. It is wonderful to see them reading and indeed their skill is far superior to their counterparts. A few of our friends put their faith in hand held video games to keep their children quiet but we find these mindless.

For longer trips, we plan a meal that everyone can enjoy and pack it in the cooler. Most of the time, we pack a picnic style lunch and find a nice spot to relax and eat. We look for areas where the kids can eat and run around. Getting rid of the excess energy can make your trip much smoother. Packing fresh fruits and juices also can be eaten and drunk in the car. Please carry a receptacle for the trash! Don't litter.

Allow yourself time to take small breaks and don't be bothered by making those restroom stops! Always accompany your little ones to public restrooms.

If you have the ability to plan your trip, make sure to point out places of interest. Encourage your children to enjoy the sights! Make the trip exciting and eventful!

Travel can be a pleasurable experience with a little planning!
